Commentary on Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians Chapter 4:
Paul closes his letter with the encouragement to stand firm in having the mindset of Jesus (2:5). Practically, this means that the community of believers should work to reconcile internal divisions, for example, a divide between two women, Euodia and Syntyche, who had been co-laborers with Paul for the Gospel (vs. 2-3). Paul shares his own testimony that his peace in God (vs. 11-13) has come from filling his mind with the things of God (vs. 8-9) and taking steps to rejoice and resist anxiety (vs. 4-7). Paul concludes offering this peace of God to us with the words, “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” (vs. 23).

Exhortations
1 Therefore, my brethren, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in this way in the Lord, my beloved.
2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 And I also ask you, who are a true coworker, help these women, for they have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. 6 Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and sup plication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, what ever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

10 I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me; you were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I complain of want; for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. 13 I can do all things in him who strengthens me.
14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving except you only; 16 for even in Thessalonica you sent me help once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift; but I seek the fruit which increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more; I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

4 1 Por tanto, hermanos míos muy queridos
y añorados, mi gozo y mi corona,
¡permaneced así, queridísimos míos, firmes
en el Señor!
2 Suplico a Evodia y a Síntique que
tengan un mismo sentir en el Señor.
3 También te ruego a ti, fiel compañero,
que ayudes a éstas, que trabajaron conmigo
por el Evangelio con Clemente y
mis otros colaboradores, cuyos nombres
están en el libro de la vida.
4 Alegraos siempre en el Señor; os lo
repito, alegraos. 5 Que vuestra comprensión
sea patente a todos los hombres. El
Señor está cerca. 6 No os preocupéis por
nada; al contrario: en toda oración y súplica,
presentad a Dios vuestras peticiones
con acción de gracias. 7 Y la paz de
Dios que supera todo entendimiento
custodiará vuestros corazones y vuestros
pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.
8 Por lo demás, hermanos, cuanto
hay de verdadero, de honorable, de
justo, de íntegro, de amable y de encomiable;
todo lo que sea virtuoso y digno
de alabanza, tenedlo en estima. 9 Lo
que aprendisteis y recibisteis, lo que oísteis
y visteis en mí, ponedlo por obra;
y el Dios de la paz estará con vosotros.
10 Me alegré mucho en el Señor de
que por fin hayáis podido manifestar
de nuevo el afecto que sentíais por mí,
porque, aunque lo sentíais, no se os había
presentado la ocasión de expresarlo.
11 No os lo digo porque esté necesitado,
pues he aprendido a contentarme
con lo que tengo: 12 he aprendido a vivir
en la pobreza, he aprendido a vivir en la
abundancia, estoy acostumbrado a todo
en todo lugar, a la hartura y a la escasez,
a la riqueza y a la pobreza. 13 Todo lo
puedo en Aquel que me conforta.
14 No obstante, habéis hecho bien al
compartir mi tribulación. 15 Sabéis bien
vosotros, filipenses, que al principio de
la evangelización, cuando salí de Macedonia,
ninguna iglesia me abrió una
cuenta de «debe» y «haber», excepto vosotros,
16 pues una y otra vez enviasteis
a Tesalónica con qué atender a mis necesidades.
17 No es que yo busque dádivas,
sino que deseo que aumenten los
intereses en vuestra cuenta. 18 He recibido
todo y tengo de sobra, estoy colmado
con los bienes recibidos de parte vuestra
por medio de Epafrodito, una ofrenda
aceptable, de suave olor, agradable ante
Dios. 19 Mi Dios colmará todas vuestras
necesidades, generosamente según su
riqueza, con la gloria por Cristo Jesús.
20 A Dios y Padre nuestro la gloria por
los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
21 Saludad a todos los santos en Cristo
Jesús. Os saludan los hermanos que
están conmigo. 22 También os saludan
todos los santos, en especial los de la
casa del César.
23 La gracia del Señor Jesucristo esté
con vuestro espíritu. Amén.
