Commentary on the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians Chapter 1:
Today we begin our first letter of Bishop Boyea’s Year of the Bible. This letter was written from Paul and Timothy to the “saints in Christ Jesus” (vs. 1), which means those who believe in Jesus as Messiah in the city of Philippi (located in modern day Greece). The community of believers in Philippi was founded around 50 AD when Paul, Timothy, and Silas had made a missionary trip to Philippi and were received positively by Lydia, a business woman, who accepted baptism along with her household (Acts 16). Now, a little over a decade later, this community of predominantly Gentile believers are receiving this letter. Chapter 1 includes the typical “thanksgiving” section of 1st century letters, where the authors express gratitude to God and to the recipients for the “good work” that God has begun and is continuing to work, “in you” (vs. 3-6). Next, Paul introduces a main topic for the letter, to be encouraged to stay faithful to and spread the Gospel, to “stand firm in one spirit” (vs. 28) in times of challenge and suffering, rather than to be torn apart by internal divisions (vs. 15-17).

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s Prayer for the Philippians
3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruits
of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Paul’s Present Circumstances
12 I want you to know, brethren, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has be come known throughout the whole praetorian guard c and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ; 14 and most of the brethren have been made confident in the Lord because of my imprisonment, and are much more bold to speak the word of God without fear.
15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel; 17 the former proclaim Christ out of partisanship, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in that I rejoice.
To Live Is Christ
19 Yes, and I shall rejoice. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I shall not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as al ways Christ will be honored in my body,* whether by life or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far bet ter. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear omen to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict which you saw and now hear to be mine.

1 1 Pablo y Timoteo, siervos de Cristo Jesús,
a todos los santos en Cristo Jesús
que están en Filipos, con los obispos y diáconos:
2 la gracia y la paz de Dios, nuestro
Padre, y del Señor Jesucristo estén con vosotros.
3 Doy gracias a mi Dios cada vez que
os recuerdo, 4 y siempre que rezo por todos
vosotros, lo hago con alegría, 5 por
vuestra participación en la difusión del
Evangelio desde el primer día hasta hoy,
6 convencido de que quien comenzó en
vosotros la obra buena la llevará a cabo
hasta el día de Cristo Jesús. 7 Es justo que
yo sienta esto por cada uno de vosotros,
ya que os tengo en el corazón, porque
todos vosotros sois partícipes de mi
gracia, tanto en mis cadenas como en la
defensa y consolidación del Evangelio.
8 Dios es testigo de cómo os amo a todos
vosotros en las entrañas de Cristo Jesús.
9 Pido también que vuestro amor crezca
cada vez más en perfecto conocimiento
y en plena sensatez, 10 para que sepáis
discernir lo mejor, a fin de que seáis puros
y sin falta hasta el día de Cristo, 11 llenos
de los frutos de justicia que proceden
de Jesucristo, para gloria y alabanza
de Dios.
12 Quiero que sepáis, hermanos, que
las cosas que me han ocurrido han servido
para difundir más el Evangelio,
13 de modo que, ante todo el pretorio y
ante todos los demás, ha quedado patente
que me encuentro encadenado
por Cristo, 14 y así la mayor parte de los
hermanos en el Señor, alentados por
mis cadenas, se han atrevido con más
audacia a predicar sin miedo la palabra
de Dios. 15 Algunos, en efecto, predican
a Cristo por envidia y rivalidad, otros
en cambio con buena voluntad; 16 éstos,
ciertamente, por caridad, sabiendo
que he sido constituido para defensa
del Evangelio; 17 aquéllos, sin embargo,
anuncian a Cristo por rivalidad, de
modo no sincero, pensando aumentar
la aflicción de mis cadenas. 18 Pero ¡qué
importa! Con tal de que en cualquier
caso –por hipocresía o sinceramente–
se anuncie a Cristo, yo con eso me alegro;
aún más, me seguiré alegrando,
19 pues sé que me aprovecha para la salvación,
gracias a vuestras oraciones y al
auxilio del Espíritu de Jesucristo.
20 Así es mi expectación y esperanza,
de que en nada seré defraudado, sino
que con toda seguridad, ahora como
siempre, Cristo será glorificado en mi
cuerpo, tanto en mi vida como en mi
muerte.
21 Porque para mí, el vivir es Cristo,
y el morir una ganancia. 22 Pero si vivir
en la carne me supone trabajar con
fruto, entonces no sé qué escoger. 23 Me
siento apremiado por los dos extremos:
el deseo que tengo de morir para estar
con Cristo, lo cual es muchísimo mejor,
24 o permanecer en la carne, que es más
necesario para vosotros. 25 A la vista de
esto último, estoy persuadido de que me
quedaré y permaneceré con todos vosotros
para vuestro provecho y gozo de la
fe; 26 para que conmigo, con ocasión de
mi presencia de nuevo entre vosotros,
aumente vuestro orgullo de ser de Cristo
Jesús.
27 Sólo importa una cosa: que llevéis
una vida digna del Evangelio de Cristo,
para que, tanto si voy a veros como si estoy
ausente, sepa que estáis firmes en un
solo Espíritu, luchando unánimes por la
fe del Evangelio, 28 y sin dejaros intimidar
en nada por los adversarios: lo que
para ellos es señal de perdición, para vosotros,
en cambio, es señal de salvación.
Todo esto viene de Dios. 29 Porque a vosotros
os ha sido concedida la gracia por
Cristo, no sólo para que creáis en él, sino
también para que padezcáis por él, 30 sosteniendo
el mismo combate que visteis
en mí, y del que ahora os hablo.
