Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew Chapter 28:

On the morning of the first day of the week, women come to visit Jesus’ tomb. An earthquake and angel of the Lord as stunning as lightning greet them. God is at work, it’s the first day of the new creation. Matthew began his Gospel in Chapter 1, telling us of the “genealogy” (literally in Greek, the “Genesis”) of Jesus. The new, victorious age Jesus has won has significance on par with the creation of the world. The angel tells the women to go announce this in Galilee, and on the way, they meet Jesus. The women prostrate themselves, giving Jesus homage (an action foreshadowed by the Magi). We hear of Jesus’ forgiveness--Jesus calls the disciples, those who had turned away and abandoned him days earlier, “brothers.” In the new creation, they have been returned to fellowship with Jesus. In Galilee, the Eleven meet Jesus on a mountain, reminiscent of Jesus’ other significant teaching moments in Ch 5-7 and Ch 24-25. Finally, the Eleven, together prostrate themselves and give homage, worship to Jesus--and yet in that moment, doubt is still present (vs. 17). As part of the new creation of resurrection, Jesus is continually restoring us. Even with their doubt, Jesus gives authority to the Eleven to go to “all nations,” meaning the Gentiles--a wider scope than the mission to Israel Jesus had previously given them (10:6). As they now begin making disciples, Jesus will be with them always (vs. 28), just as the prophet Isaiah had foretold (Is 7:14). Jesus is our Emmanuel, “God with us” (1:23) as we go and live in the age of Jesus’ victory

The Gospel of St. Matthew Chapter 28:

The Resurrection of Jesus
1 Now after the sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Behold, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Hail!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard
11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed; and this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

Jesus Commissions the Disciples
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

*Daily Lectio Divina Question:

After hearing the announcement of Jesus’ resurrection, the women “departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy” (v. 8). Lord, what is it about the mystery of your resurrection that caused them to be filled with fear and great joy?

Mateo 28

Mateo 28

6 No

está aquí, porque ha resucitado como

había dicho. Venid a ver el sitio donde

estaba puesto. 7 Marchad enseguida y

os lo he dicho.

10 Entonces

Jesús les dijo:

–No tengáis miedo; id a anunciar a

mis hermanos que vayan a Galilea: allí

me verán.

17 Y en cuanto le vieron le adoraron;

pero otros dudaron. 18 Y Jesús se

acercó y les dijo:

–Se me ha dado toda potestad en

el cielo y en la tierra. 19 Id, pues, y haced

discípulos a todos los pueblos, bautizándolos

en el nombre del Padre y

del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo; 20 y enseñándoles

a guardar todo cuanto os he

mandado.
