Read: Why Roe Must Go by Bishop Earl Boyea

This week saw the leak of a draft opinion by the United States Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

Late Monday evening, the political publication, Politico, revealed the draft opinion, written by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health case, in which he concluded, “we hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” saying that Roe “was egregiously wrong from the start.”

Today, May 4, Bishop Earl Boyea is calling upon Catholics, and all people of goodwill, within the Diocese of Lansing to continue to pray and fast for an end to Roe v. Wade and for the fostering of a new culture of life across the United States and beyond. Bishop Boyea writes:

“This week, an unprecedented leak from the United States Supreme Court has led many to believe that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe and Casey. However, the Supreme Court's opinion has not been released. We need to continue to pray and fast for the protection of human life, especially that vulnerable life in the womb.”

“If the draft opinion does, in fact, turn out to be the final opinion, then we have work to do. This will not mark the beginning of the end of abortion. Rather, it will be the end of the beginning.”

“We must continue to pray and fast for a change of heart in those who justify the taking of such human life and especially for the defeat of the current petition drive across Michigan which seeks to put a right to abortion at all stages and without limits in our state constitution.”

“And, no matter what the outcome of the Supreme Court case, we must commit ourselves to assisting mothers who are struggling or are pregnant and need help. We must walk with moms in need.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, pray for us!
