Read: Lest we forget | A prayerful reflection for Veterans Day by Father Peter Ludwig, US Navy Chaplain

Today is Veterans Day. Today is also the Feast of Saint Martin of Tours, the 4th century soldier turned bishop of Tours in France.

Prayerfully reflecting upon today’s twin commemorations is Father Peter Ludwig, pictured below, priest of the Diocese of Lansing and, as of last month, a chaplain in the United States Navy under the aegis of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. Father Ludwig writes:

The most famous story about Saint Martin of Tours is a story where Saint Martin divides his cloak to share it with a beggar. At the time, Saint Martin was serving in the Roman military. Saint Martin then received a vision in which it was really Christ who received Saint Martin’s cloak.

Because Saint Martin exemplified generosity in a military setting, he became a patron for military around the world.

Saint Martin shows us that we are never too busy or too important to stop to show someone kindness. Our work settings, even a military work setting, can be a place of encounter with the living God. Every moment is an opportunity for the sacred.

Military service provides both many challenges and many opportunities to live the Faith well. As I move into service as a Navy Chaplain, I hope to follow Saint Martin’s example of generosity and integrity and help others do the same.

Saint Martin of Tours, pray for us!
