Genesis 1: 14-19
“And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.” (Genesis 1: 20-23)
- I wonder what the “greater light” is? (sun)
- What about the lesser light? (moon)
- God set the lights and the stars in the “firmament”, but what is the firmament again? (sky or heavens)
- I wonder how we can use the lights for day and night? I wonder how we can use the lights for seasons and years?
Monday, May 31st
Genesis 1: 20-23
“And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.” (Genesis 1: 20-23)
- What did God create in our story today?
- I wonder what kind of sea monsters God created? Do you think they were real monsters? (pre-historic sea creatures ~ whales ~ sharks ~ these are some of the typical answers from children)
- What else did He create?
- Can you name some birds?
Tuesday, June 1st
Genesis 1: 24-25
“And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1: 24-25)
- What did you hear that God created today?
- What “creatures or beasts” (animals) can you think of that God has created?
- What kind of creatures creep on the ground?
- What are your favorite creatures?
- Did you know that God knows that about you?
Wednesday, June 2nd
Genesis 1: 26-28
Then God said, “Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”
- What did you hear?
- Who did God create in His own image? (humans)
- It says that God created humans in His own image and likeness. I wonder how can we be like God?
- I wonder what it means to have “dominion” over the creatures of the earth? (Humans have authority over the fish and animals of the earth and take care to help them thrive and do well.)
Thursday, June 3rd
Genesis 1: 29-31
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.” (Genesis 1: 26-28)
- What did you hear?
- What did God give to the humans? (Everything they needed)
- Each time God created something, He saw that it was “good”. I wonder what that tells us about all of God’s creation and about us humans? (Everything that God creates is good.)
Friday, June 4th
Genesis 2: 1-3
“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which he had done in creation.” (Genesis 2:1-3)
- What did you hear?
- It says God blessed the seventh day and “hallowed” it. What do you think that word “hallowed” means? (Set that day aside, make it holy. The word Sabbath means rest.)
- In what ways can we honor Sunday, our seventh day? (Honor God, love our neighbor and rest.)
Saturday, June 5th
Dear Families,
Today we move to the story of Abram (Abraham) our Father in Faith. This story shows how Abraham trusted in the Lord (God), was obedient to Him and received the Lord’s blessing.
Genesis 12: 1-2
“Now the Lord said to Abram (Abraham), “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Genesis 12: 1-2)
- What did you hear?
- Did the Lord (God) tell Abram (Abraham) where he was sending him?
- I wonder how Abram felt about that?
- What did the Lord promise to Abram?
