Commentary on the Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 20:
A new phase of civil war begins when Sheba of the tribe of Benjamin renounces King David’s rule. The ten tribes other than Judah follow suit. Joab again takes advantage of the opportunities of war to kill one of his enemies, this time Amasa, which also returns military command to Joab. Joab pursues Sheba and besieges the city where he has fled. The people of the town do not want war, and a wise woman prevents further disaster. Once Sheba is killed, the tribes unite their militaries behind Joab and David’s reign is stabilized.
The Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 20:
The Rebellion of Sheba
1 Now there happened to be there a worthless fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite; and he
blew the trumpet, and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!”
2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house, and put them in a house under guard, and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.
4 Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” 5 So Amasa went to summon Judah; but he delayed beyond the set time which had been appointed him. 6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself fortified cities, and cause us trouble.” 7 And there went out after Abishai, Joab and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8 When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened upon his loins, and as he went forward it fell out. 9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10 But Amasa did not observe the sword which was in Joab’s hand; so Joab struck him with it in the body, and shed his bowels to the ground, without striking a second blow; and he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 And one of Joab’s men took his stand by Amasa, and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.” 12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And any one who came by, seeing him, stopped; and when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and threw a garment over him. 13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah; and all the Bichrites l assembled, and followed him in. 15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Bethmaacah; they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and they were battering the wall, to throw it down. 16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Hear! Hear! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’ ” 17 And he came near her; and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18 Then she said, “They were wont to say in old time, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel’; and so they settled a matter. 19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel; you seek to destroy a city which is a mother in Israel; why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?” 20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy! 21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David; give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” 22 Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
23 Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24 and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 25 and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; 26 and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest.

Joab's murderous action in vs 10 is not punished until David directs Solomon (1 Kings 2:1-9) to take action. David, even though surrounded by violence, always seeks peace and unity. Lord, how can I be a minister of peace and unity in various strained and volatile situations in my own life?

1 Se encontraba allí un hombre inicuo

Bicorí, que hizo sonar la trompeta y dijo:
–No tenemos posesiones comunes
con David,
ni tenemos herencia común con el
hijo de Jesé.
¡Varones de Israel, a vuestras tiendas!
2 Todos los israelitas se alejaron de
David para seguir a Seba, hijo de Bicorí,
mientras que los de Judá permanecieron
fieles a su rey desde el Jordán hasta
Jerusalén.
3 David entró en su casa en Jerusalén,
tomó las diez concubinas que había
dejado para el cuidado de la casa y las
puso bajo custodia. Las alimentó, pero

4 El rey dijo a Amasá:

6 Entonces David dijo a Abisay:
–Seba, hijo de Bicorí, va a hacernos
más daño que Absalón; toma, pues, a
los siervos de tu señor y persíguelo antes
de que alcance ciudades amuralladas
y se nos escape.
7 Salió Abisay al frente de los hombres
de Joab, los quereteos, los peleteos
y todos los hombres valerosos. Salieron
de Jerusalén para perseguir a Seba,
hijo de Bicorí. 8 Cuando se encontraban
junto a la piedra grande que hay en Gabaón,
Amasá se presentó frente a ellos.
Joab llevaba vestidura militar y un cinturón
con la espada envainada junto al
muslo. Ésta se le salió y cayó al suelo.
9 Joab dijo a Amasá:
–¿Estás bien, hermano mío?
Y con la mano derecha sujetó
a Amasá por la barba para besarlo.
10 Amasá no se fijó en la espada que Joab
tenía en la otra mano. Entonces Joab le
hirió en el bajo vientre, derramando por
tierra sus entrañas. Y, sin darle otro golpe,
Amasá murió.
Joab y su hermano Abisay persiguieron
a Seba, hijo de Bicorí. 11 Uno de
los jóvenes de Joab permaneció junto a
Amasá y dijo:
–El que prefiera a Joab y el que esté
de parte de David, que siga a Joab.
12 Amasá yacía cubierto de sangre
en medio del camino. Aquel hombre,
viendo que todo el pueblo se detenía
ante él, apartó a Amasá del camino hacia
el campo y echó sobre él un manto.
13 Cuando fue retirado del camino, todos
pasaban siguiendo a Joab en persecución
de Seba, hijo de Bicorí.
14 Seba atravesó todas las tribus de
Israel hasta Abel-Bet-Maacá, donde habían
sido convocados los de la familia
de Bicorí: todos entraron tras él. 15 Llegaron
los otros y cercaron a Seba en
Abel-Bet-Maacá, levantando un terraplén
contra la ciudad. Cuando todos
los que estaban con Joab se pusieron a
excavar para demoler los muros, 16 una
mujer sabia gritó desde la ciudad:
–¡Escuchad, escuchad! Decid a Joab
que se acerque aquí que tengo que hablarle.
17 Cuando se acercó le dijo la mujer:
–¿Tú eres Joab?
Él respondió:
–Sí, yo soy.
Ella dijo:
–Escucha las palabras de tu sierva.
Él contestó:
–Escucho.
Y continuó la mujer:
18 –Antes solía decirse: «Que consulten
en Abel y resolverán la cuestión»,
19 porque somos los más pacíficos y fieles
de Israel. Y tú pretendes destruir una
ciudad que es una gran metrópoli en Israel.
¿Por qué vas a arruinar la heredad
del Señor?
20 Respondió Joab:
–Lejos, lejos de mí arruinar ni destruir
nada. 21 No es éste el problema,
sino que un hombre de la montaña de
Efraím, llamado Seba de Bicorí, ha alzado
la mano contra el rey David. Entregadme
sólo a él y me alejaré de la ciudad.
Entonces dijo la mujer:
–Te será arrojada su cabeza desde lo
alto de la muralla.
22 La mujer entró en la ciudad, habló
con sagacidad a los suyos y éstos decapitaron
a Seba, hijo de Bicorí, y arrojaron
su cabeza a Joab. Éste mandó tocar
la trompeta y se alejaron de la ciudad,
cada uno a su tienda. Joab volvió a Jerusalén
junto al rey.
23 Joab estaba al frente de todo el
ejército de Israel; Benaías, hijo de Yoyadá,
estaba al frente de los quereteos y
de los peleteos; 24 Adoniram revisaba los
tributos; Josafat, hijo de Ajilud, era canciller;
25 Susa, escriba; y Sadoc y Abiatar
eran sacerdotes. 26 También Irá, de Yaír,
era sacerdote de David.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
La acción asesina de Joab en el versículo 10 no es castigada hasta que David ordena a Salomón (1 Reyes 2:1-9) que actúe. David, a pesar de estar rodeado de violencia, siempre busca la paz y la unidad. Señor, ¿cómo puedo ser un ministro de paz y unidad en diversas situaciones tensas y violentas de mi vida?
