Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 19:
In their third month of travel from Egypt, God’s people encamp at Mt. Sinai. God instructs Moses to relate His plan of salvation: If the people are obedient to God’s Covenant – which will soon be revealed – then they will be God’s special possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation (Peter applies this to Christians in 1 Peter 2:9). The people agree to follow God’s word. Then, for three days, they prepare to meet their God by washing their outer garments and inwardly consecrating themselves to the Lord. We begin to see the seriousness of being allowed into God’s presence as God establishes boundaries the people cannot cross once He descends on the mountain. When the Lord comes upon Mt. Sinai, it may have seemed like a volcano: thunder, lightning, thick clouds, trumpet blasts, smoke, and fire.
The Book of Exodus, Chapter 19:
The Israelites Reach Mount Sinai
1 On the third new moon after the sons of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And when they set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain. 3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the sons of Israel: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my own possession among all peoples; for all the earth is mine, 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the LORD had commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD. 9 And the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you for ever.”
Then Moses told the words of the people to the LORD. 10 And the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments, 11 and be ready by the third day; for on the third day the LORD will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 And you shall set bounds for the people round about, saying, ‘Take heed that you do not go up into the mountain or touch the border of it; whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death; 13 no hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and consecrated the people; and they washed their garments. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.”
God Speaks to Moses on the Mountain
16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God; and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 And Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and the smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. 19 And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. 20 And the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 And the LORD said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to the LORD to gaze and many of them perish. 22 And also let the priests who come near to the LORD consecrate themselves, lest the LORD break out upon them.” 23 And Moses said to the LORD, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for you yourself charged us, saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain, and consecrate it.’ ” 24 And the LORD said to him, “Go down, and come up bringing Aaron with you; but do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest he break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

A los tres meses de la salida del
país de Egipto, ese mismo día, los
hijos de Israel llegaron al desierto del
Sinaí. 2 Habían salido de Refidim, llegaron
al desierto del Sinaí y acamparon.
Israel puso allí el campamento frente a
la montaña.
3 Moisés subió hacia Dios y el Señor
lo llamó desde la montaña y le dijo:
–Esto has de decir a la casa de Jacob
y esto has de anunciar a los hijos
de Israel: «4 Vosotros habéis visto lo que
he hecho con los egipcios y cómo os he
llevado en alas de águila y os he traído
hacia mí. 5 Ahora, pues, si de veras escucháis
mi voz y guardáis mi alianza,
seréis mi propiedad exclusiva entre todos
los pueblos, porque mía es toda la
tierra; 6 vosotros seréis para mí un reino
de sacerdotes y una nación santa». Éstas
son las palabras que has de decir a los
hijos de Israel.
7 Fue, pues, Moisés y convocó a los
ancianos del pueblo y les expuso todas
las palabras que el Señor le había ordenado.
8 El pueblo entero respondió a una
diciendo:
–Haremos cuanto ha dicho el Señor.
Y Moisés comunicó al Señor la respuesta
del pueblo. 9 Entonces dijo el Señor
a Moisés:
–He aquí que Yo voy a presentarme
a ti en una densa nube para que el pueblo
oiga cuándo me comunico contigo,
y así te crean a ti siempre.
Y Moisés refirió al Señor la respuesta
de su pueblo.
10 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–Ve al pueblo y haz que se purifiquen
hoy y mañana; que laven sus vestidos.
11 Y que estén preparados para el
tercer día, porque el día tercero el Señor
descenderá a la vista de todo el pueblo
sobre el monte Sinaí. 12 Señalarás un
límite al pueblo alrededor de la montaña
y le dirás: «Os guardaréis de subir a
la montaña, y hasta de aproximaros a su
falda. El que se aproxime a la montaña
morirá sin remedio». 13 Pero nadie pondrá
la mano sobre el culpable, sino que
será lapidado o asaeteado; sea hombre o
animal no quedará con vida. Sólo cuando
suene el cuerno, subirán a la montaña.
14 Bajó, pues, Moisés de la montaña
hasta el pueblo, hizo que se purificaran,
y lavaron sus vestidos. 15 Y dijo al pueblo:
–Estad preparados para el tercer día;
y no os lleguéis a mujer alguna.
16 El día tercero, al despuntar la aurora,
hubo truenos y relámpagos, y una
densa nube sobre la montaña, y un sonido
muy intenso de trompeta. Todo el
pueblo que estaba en el campamento se
estremeció. 17 Moisés hizo salir al pueblo
del campamento al encuentro de Dios;
ellos se detuvieron al pie de la montaña.
18 Todo el monte Sinaí humeaba porque
el Señor había descendido sobre él
en el fuego. El humo subía como humo
de horno y toda la montaña se estremeció
violentamente. 19 El sonido de la
trompeta se fue haciendo más intenso:
Moisés hablaba y Dios le respondía con
el trueno. 20 El Señor descendió sobre el
monte Sinaí, sobre la cima de la montaña.
Luego el Señor llamó a Moisés a la
cumbre de la montaña y allí subió Moisés.
21 Y dijo el Señor a Moisés:
–Baja y advierte al pueblo que no se
acerquen a mirar al Señor; si no, morirán
muchos de ellos. 22 Además, los sacerdotes
que se acercan al Señor, que se
purifiquen para que el Señor no los castigue.
23 Moisés dijo al Señor:
–El pueblo no podrá subir al monte
Sinaí, porque tú nos has amenazado
al decir: «Señala un límite a la montaña
y declárala sagrada».
24 El Señor le respondió:
–Anda, baja; y después, subid tú y
Aarón; pero los sacerdotes y el pueblo
que no traspasen el límite con intención
de subir hacia el Señor para que no los
castigue.
25 Bajó, pues, Moisés a donde estaba
el pueblo y se lo transmitió.
