Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 16:
One month after the Passover and miraculous departure from Egypt (for dating see 12:1-5, 16:1), the people begin to murmur, that is, complain, about the lack of food and their fear of starving to death in the wilderness. Although they have seen God’s wonders, they blame Moses and Aaron for their circumstances. Despite their dire situation in Egypt, they remember it fondly and wish God had killed them there! The Lord hears this murmuring and offers a solution: He will rain down bread from Heaven in the morning and provide quail in the evening. To receive this bread, called manna, the people must obey certain rules that prevent hoarding, gluttony, and laziness, and that require active participation to obtain the gift. God rests on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3), so the people must plan ahead so that they may also rest that day. Like the Passover ritual, the manna becomes a witness of God’s care for His people and a prefiguring of the Eucharist.

Manna from Heaven
1 They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your murmurings against the LORD. For what are we, that you murmur against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your murmurings which you murmur against him—what are we? Your murmurings are not against us but against the LORD.”
9 And Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your murmurings.’ ” 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israel; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’ ”
13 In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning dew lay round about the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as hoarfrost on the ground. 15 When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Gather of it, every man of you, as much as he can eat; you shall take an omer apiece, according to the number of the persons whom each of you has in his tent.’ ” 17 And the sons of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no man leave any of it till the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.
22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers apiece; and when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay by to be kept till the morning.’ ” 24 So they laid it by till the morning, as Moses bade them; and it did not become foul, and there were no worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is a sabbath, there will be none.” 27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none. 28 And the LORD said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! The LORD has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days; remain every man of you in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 Now the house of Israel called its name manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 And Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the covenant, to be kept. 35 And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land; they ate the manna, till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (An omer is the tenth part of an ephah.)

1 Toda la comunidad de los hijos
de Israel partió de Elim y el día
quince del segundo mes de su salida del
país de Egipto, llegó al desierto de Sin,
que está entre Elim y el Sinaí. 2 La comunidad
de los hijos de Israel murmuraba
contra Moisés y contra Aarón en el
desierto. 3 Los hijos de Israel les decían:
–¿Quién nos hubiera dado morir a
manos del Señor en el país de Egipto,
cuando nos sentábamos junto a la olla
de carne y comíamos pan hasta saciarnos? Porque vosotros nos habéis sacado
a este desierto para matar de hambre a
toda esta asamblea.
4 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–He aquí que voy a hacer llover para
vosotros pan desde el cielo; el pueblo
saldrá a recoger cada día la porción cotidiana;
así les pondré a prueba y veré si
se comporta según mi ley o no. 5 El sexto
día, habrán de preparar lo que han recogido,
que será el doble de lo que recolectan
cada día.
6 Moisés y Aarón dijeron a todos los
hijos de Israel:
–Esta tarde sabréis que es el Señor
quien os ha sacado del país de Egipto,
7 y por la mañana veréis la gloria del Señor,
que ha escuchado vuestras murmuraciones
contra Él; pues nosotros ¿qué
somos para que nos difaméis?
8 Moisés añadió:
–El Señor os dará por la tarde carne
para comer y por la mañana pan para
saciaros, porque ha escuchado vuestras
murmuraciones contra Él; pues nosotros
¿qué somos? No van contra nosotros
vuestras murmuraciones, sino contra
el Señor.
9 Moisés dijo a Aarón:
–Di a toda la comunidad de los hijos
de Israel: «Acercaos ante el Señor porque
ha escuchado vuestras murmuraciones
».
10 Y ocurrió que mientras hablaba
Aarón a toda la comunidad de los hijos
de Israel, volvieron su rostro hacia el
desierto, y he aquí que la gloria del Señor
se manifestó en la nube. 11 Entonces
el Señor dijo a Moisés:
12 –He escuchado las murmuraciones
de los hijos de Israel. Diles: «Al atardecer
comeréis carne y por la mañana
os saciaréis de pan. Así conoceréis que
yo soy el Señor, vuestro Dios».
13 Aquella tarde, en efecto, subieron
las codornices y cubrieron el campamento;
y por la mañana, hubo una capa
de rocío alrededor del campamento.
14 Al evaporarse la capa de rocío quedó
sobre la superficie del desierto una cosa
blanca delgada, como escarcha sobre la
tierra. 15 Al verlo los hijos de Israel se dijeron
entre sí:
–¿Man–hu? (que significa: «¿Qué es
esto?»)
Pues no sabían lo que era. Moisés les
dijo:
–Esto es el pan que el Señor os da
como alimento. 16 Ésta es la orden que ha
dado el Señor: tome cada uno según su
necesidad, un ómer por cabeza, según el
número de personas; cada uno recogerá
también para los que están en su tienda.
17 Así hicieron los hijos de Israel y
recogieron unos más y otros menos.
18 Luego lo midieron con el ómer y ni a
los que tomaron más les sobraba ni a
los que tomaron menos les faltaba; cada
uno había recogido según su necesidad.
19 Moisés les dijo:
–Que nadie guarde nada para mañana.
20 Sin embargo no le escucharon y algunos
dejaron parte para la mañana siguiente,
pero crió gusanos y se pudrió;
y Moisés se irritó con ellos.
21 Lo recogían, por tanto, por la mañana,
cada uno según su necesidad,
pues el calor del sol lo derretía.
22 El día sexto recogían el doble de pan,
dos ómer para cada uno. Vinieron entonces
los representantes de la comunidad
y se lo contaron a Moisés. 23 Él les dijo:
–He aquí lo que ha dicho el Señor:
«Mañana es sábado, descanso consagrado
para el Señor: lo que debáis cocer,
cocedlo; lo que debáis hervir, hervidlo,
y todo lo que sobre guardadlo como reserva
para mañana».
24 Y lo guardaron para el día siguiente
como lo había ordenado Moisés y no
se pudrió ni se agusanó. 25 Moisés dijo:
–Comedlo hoy, porque hoy es sábado
en honor del Señor; hoy no encontraréis
nada en el campo. 26 Seis días lo
recogeréis y el séptimo día, el sábado,
no habrá nada.
27 De hecho, el día séptimo salieron
algunos del pueblo para recoger y no
encontraron nada.
28 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–¿Hasta cuándo os negaréis a guardar
mis preceptos y mis leyes? 29 Mirad
que el Señor os ha dado el sábado; por
eso os da el sexto día ración para dos
días; permaneced cada uno en su sitio;
que nadie salga de su sitio el día séptimo.
30 El pueblo descansó el día séptimo.
31 La casa de Israel lo llamó maná; era
como una semilla de coriandro, blanco
y su sabor como una torta de miel. 32 Y
Moisés dijo:
–Éste es el mandamiento que el Señor
ha ordenado: llenad un ómer de
esto y conservadlo para vuestras generaciones,
para que vean el pan que os di
de comer en el desierto cuando os saqué
del país de Egipto.
33 Moisés dijo a Aarón:
–Toma un recipiente, pon en él un
ómer de maná y déjalo delante del Señor,
para conservarlo de generación en
generación.
34 Aarón, tal como el Señor ordenó a
Moisés, lo dejó delante del Testimonio
para conservarlo.
35 Los hijos de Israel comieron el
maná durante cuarenta años hasta su
entrada en tierra habitada; comieron
el maná hasta su entrada en los confines
de la tierra de Canaán. 36 El ómer de
maná es la décima parte de un efah.
