Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 14:
Now that Pharaoh has commanded the Hebrews to leave Egypt, God leads His people out of the country and to the shores of the Red Sea. Pharaoh changes his mind and sends his powerful army chasing after the Hebrews. The Hebrews see themselves as trapped between a terrifying army and the Sea, so they cry out to Moses and God, accusing them of bringing the people to the wilderness to die. Moses exorts them to fear not, stand firm, and see how the Lord will work for them. The next day, the Lord opens a way through the Red Sea, allowing the Hebrews to escape. When the Egyptian army follows, they become trapped and God gains His final victory over the Egyptians. Repeated words in this chapter remind us of the power of the Egyptian military and how the Lord’s glory is greater as He fights for His people. Having witnessed God’s power over nature and the mighty Egyptian army, the Hebrews come to fear God, believe in Him, and believe in Moses.

Crossing the Red Sea
1 Then the Lord said to Moses: Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall camp opposite it, by the sea. Pharaoh will say of the Israelites, “They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has closed in on them.” I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, so that I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord. And they did so.
When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the minds of Pharaoh and his officials were changed toward the people, and they said, “What have we done, letting Israel leave our service?” So he had his chariot made ready, and took his army with him; he took six hundred picked chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt and he pursued the Israelites, who were going out boldly. The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his chariot drivers and his army; they overtook them camped by the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.
As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 But Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.”
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. 16 But you lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. 17 Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his chariot drivers. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his chariot drivers.”
19 The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. 20 It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lorddrove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. 22 The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued, and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. 24 At the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. 25 He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”
The Pursuers Drowned
26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the Lord tossed the Egyptians into the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. 29 But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.
30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
*Daily Lectio Divina Question:
Lord, help me imagine being the person of Moses throughout this chapter as I walk through the scene where he encourages the people to not fear but trust in you and your promises to the Israelite people, and then as he stretches his hand over the sea to pray the waters stop Pharaoh's army. Lord, help me pray for that same trust in you and that same power in prayer to expect miracles be done through me.

El Señor habló a Moisés diciendo:
2 –Di a los hijos de Israel que se vuelvan
y acampen junto a Pi–Hajirot, entre
Migdal y el mar, frente a Baal–Safón.
Frente a este lugar acamparéis de cara
al mar. 3 El Faraón pensará de los hijos
de Israel: «Andan perdidos por el país y
el desierto les cierra el paso». 4 Yo endureceré
el corazón del Faraón y los perseguirá;
y manifestaré mi gloria a costa
del Faraón y de su ejército; y sabrán los
egipcios que yo soy el Señor.
Y así lo hicieron.
5 Cuando anunciaron al rey de Egipto
que el pueblo había huido, se mudó el
corazón del Faraón y el de sus servidores
en contra del pueblo, y dijeron:
–¿Qué hemos hecho dejando salir a
Israel de nuestra servidumbre?
Entonces hizo uncir sus carros y reunió
consigo a su pueblo; 7 tomó seiscientos
carros escogidos y todos los
carros de Egipto, con sus correspondientes
guerreros. 8 El Señor endureció
el corazón del Faraón, rey de Egipto,
el cual persiguió a los hijos de Israel.
Pero los hijos de Israel salían con aire
de triunfo. 9 Los egipcios los persiguieron,
todos los caballos, los carros del Faraón,
los jinetes y el ejército; y les dieron
alcance cuando acampaban junto a Pi–
Hajirot frente a Baal–Safón.
10 El Faraón estaba cerca cuando los
hijos de Israel alzaron la vista y vieron
que los egipcios seguían tras ellos. Entonces
los hijos de Israel temieron mucho
y clamaron al Señor. 11 Y dijeron a
Moisés:
–¿Acaso no había sepulcros en Egipto,
para que nos hayas traído a morir en
el desierto? ¿Qué has hecho con nosotros
sacándonos de Egipto? 12 ¿No es
esto lo que te decíamos en Egipto: «Déjanos;
continuaremos sirviendo a los
egipcios; es preferible servir a los egipcios
que morir en el desierto»?
13 Moisés respondió al pueblo:
–No temáis, manteneos firmes y veréis
la salvación que el Señor os concede
hoy, porque los egipcios que ahora veis,
no volveréis a verlos jamás. 14 El Señor
peleará por vosotros y vosotros podréis
estar tranquilos.
15 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–¿Por qué clamas hacia mí? Di a los
hijos de Israel que se pongan en camino.
16 Y tú, alza tu bastón y extiende tu mano
hacia el mar y divídelo para que los hijos
de Israel pasen por medio del mar
como por tierra seca. 17 Yo, por mi parte,
voy a endurecer el corazón de los egipcios
para que entren tras ellos; así manifestaré
mi gloria a costa del Faraón y de
todo su ejército, de sus carros y de sus
guerreros. 18 Y sabrán los egipcios que
yo soy el Señor, cuando yo muestre mi
gloria a costa del Faraón, de sus carros y
de sus guerreros.
19 El ángel de Dios, que iba delante
del campamento de Israel, se puso
en marcha y se situó tras ellos. Se puso
en marcha también la columna de nube
que iba delante de ellos y se situó detrás,
20 interponiéndose entre el campamento
de los egipcios y el campamento
de Israel; la nube era tan oscura por
un lado y tan luminosa por otro, que no
pudieron acercarse unos a otros en toda
la noche.
21 Moisés extendió su mano sobre el
mar, y el Señor, mediante un viento solano
que sopló toda la noche, empujó el
mar hasta que se secó, y se dividieron
las aguas. 22 Los hijos de Israel entraron
por medio del mar como por lo seco y
las aguas formaban como una muralla
a derecha e izquierda. 23 Los egipcios los
persiguieron con todos los caballos del
Faraón, los carros y los guerreros, entrando
tras ellos hasta el medio del mar.
24 Al romper el alba el Señor observó
desde la columna de nube y fuego los
campamentos de los egipcios y los desbarató.
25 Hizo que se trabaran las ruedas
de sus carros, de modo que avanzaran
con dificultad. Entonces los egipcios se
dijeron:
–Huyamos de delante de Israel porque
el Señor combate a su favor en contra
de los egipcios.
26 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–Extiende tu mano sobre el mar y
las aguas se volverán sobre los egipcios,
sobre sus carros y sus guerreros.
27 Extendió Moisés su mano sobre el
mar y éste volvió a su estado habitual al
rayar el día. Los egipcios al huir, se encontraron
con las aguas y así el Señor
precipitó a los egipcios al medio del
mar. 28 Las aguas volvieron, y cubrieron
los carros y los guerreros de todo el ejér
cito del Faraón, que había entrado tras
ellos en el mar. No escapó ni uno solo.
29 Los hijos de Israel pasaron por medio
del mar como por lo seco y las aguas
formaban como una muralla a derecha
e izquierda. 30 Así el Señor salvó aquel
día a Israel de la mano de los egipcios, e
Israel pudo ver a los egipcios muertos a
la orilla del mar. 31 Israel vio la mano poderosa
con la que el Señor trató a Egipto,
y el pueblo temió al Señor y creyó en
el Señor y en Moisés, su siervo.
