Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 10:

Prior to the eighth plague, Moses again offers Pharaoh the opportunity to humble himself before the Lord in order to avoid bringing further destruction upon his country. Even Pharaoh’s servants plead with him to change course! Pharaoh partially agrees, deciding to allow the Hebrew men, but not the women, to leave for worship. God sends a swarm of locusts to consume every living plant that had survived the previous plagues. This devastation to his nation’s economy and welfare causes some remorse in Pharaoh, but not enough to prevent the ninth strike. God brings a thick darkness to Egypt, but the region where the Hebrews live is filled with light. Again, Pharaoh offers only partial steps to allow the Hebrews to worship.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh; for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them, 2 and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your son’s son how I have made sport of the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them; that you may know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me. 4 For if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, 5 and they shall cover the face of the land, so that no one can see the land; and they shall eat what is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours which grows in the ﬁeld, 6 and they shall ﬁll your houses, and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians; as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.’ ” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.
7 And Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God; do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?” 8 So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh; and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God; but who are to go?” 9 And Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; we will go with our sons and daughters and with our ﬂocks and herds, for we must hold a feast to the Lord.” 10 And he said to them, “The Lord be with you, if ever I let you and your little ones go! Look, you have some evil purpose in mind. 11 No! Go, the men among you, and serve the Lord, for that is what you desire.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come upon the land of Egypt, and eat every plant in the land, all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt, and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever shall be again. 15 For they covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the ﬁeld, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore, forgive my sin, I beg you, only this once, and entreat the Lord your God only to remove this death from me.” 18 So he went out from Pharaoh, and entreated the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea; not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

The Ninth Plague: Darkness

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days; 23 they did not see one another, nor did any rise from his place for three days; but all the sons of Israel had light where they dwelt. 24 Then Pharaoh called Moses, and said, “Go, serve the Lord; your children also may go with you; only let your ﬂocks and your herds remain behind.” 25 But Moses said, “You must also let us have sacriﬁces and burnt offerings, that we may sacriﬁce to the Lord our God. 26 Our cattle also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the Lord our God, and we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.” 27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me; take heed to yourself; never see my face again; for in the day you see my face you shall die.” 29 Moses said, “As you say! I will not see your face again.”

Today we read the disastrous effects of Pharaoh trying to restrict the way the Israelites will be allowed to worship. Moses stands firm that the whole family must be free to worship together, and they must have what they need to worship and honor God rightly. Ask the Lord to show you how these things are still needed for right worship today.

1 Dijo el Señor a Moisés:
–Preséntate al Faraón, porque
soy yo quien ha endurecido su corazón
y el de sus siervos para realizar
estos signos míos en medio de ellos; 2 y
para que pueda contarse a tus hijos y a
los hijos de tus hijos cómo he maltratado
a Egipto y los signos que he realizado
allí; para que sepáis que yo soy el Señor.
3 Moisés y Aarón se presentaron ante
el Faraón y le dijeron:
–Así dice el Señor, Dios de los hebreos:
«¿Hasta cuándo rehusarás humillarte
ante mí? Deja salir a mi pueblo para
que me dé culto. 4 Pues si rehúsas dejar salir
a mi pueblo, mira que mañana mismo
atraeré la langosta sobre tu territorio; 5 cubrirá
la superficie del país hasta el punto
de que no podrá verse el suelo; consumirá
lo poco que se os salvó del granizo y
devorará todos los árboles que os crecen
en el campo. 6 Llenarán tus casas, las de
tus siervos y las casas de todos los egipcios,
como jamás lo vieron tus padres y
los padres de tus padres desde que empezaron
a existir sobre la tierra hasta hoy».
Y volviéndose, se retiró de la presencia
del Faraón.
7 Entonces los siervos del Faraón le
dijeron:
–¿Hasta cuándo va a seguir molestándonos
ése? Deja salir a esos hombres
para que den culto al Señor, su Dios.
¿Aún no te das cuenta de que Egipto se
está arruinando?
8 Hicieron, pues, volver a Moisés y a
Aarón ante el Faraón y él les dijo:
–Id y dad culto al Señor, vuestro
Dios. Ahora bien, ¿quiénes tendrán que
ir?
9 Respondió Moisés:
–Iremos con nuestros jóvenes y
nuestros ancianos, con nuestros hijos
y nuestras hijas, con nuestras ovejas y
nuestras vacas, pues es la fiesta del Señor
para nosotros.
10 Y les dijo:
–¡Así que el Señor estará con vosotros
en cuanto os deje marchar a vosotros
y a vuestros pequeños! Ved cómo
vuestra mala intención está patente.
11 No será así; id sólo los varones y dad
culto al Señor, puesto que eso es lo que
pedís.
Y fueron arrojados de la presencia
del Faraón.
12 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés:
–Extiende tu mano sobre el país de
Egipto atrayendo la langosta; que suba
sobre el país de Egipto y devore toda
la hierba, todo lo que quedó del granizo.
13 Extendió Moisés su bastón sobre
el país de Egipto y el Señor hizo soplar
viento solano sobre el país todo aquel
día y toda la noche. A la mañana siguiente,
el viento solano había arrastrado
la langosta 14 que invadió por entero
el país de Egipto y se posó en todo el territorio
egipcio. Tal cantidad de langostas
no la hubo antes ni la habrá después.
15 Cubrieron toda la superficie del país
hasta el punto de quedar oscurecido;
devoraron toda la hierba del país, todos
los frutos de los árboles que había dejado
el granizo; no quedó absolutamente
nada verde en los árboles ni en el suelo
en todo el país de Egipto.
16 Se apresuró el Faraón a llamar a
Moisés y a Aarón y les dijo:
–He pecado contra el Señor, vuestro
Dios, y contra vosotros. 17 Pero perdonad
por esta vez mi pecado y rogad al
Señor, vuestro Dios, que aleje de mí al
menos esta pena mortal.
18 Salió Moisés de la presencia del Faraón
y rogó al Señor. 19 El Señor hizo soplar
fuerte viento del oeste que arrastró
la langosta hacia el Mar Rojo; no quedó
ni una sola langosta en el territorio
de Egipto. 20 Pero el Señor endureció el
corazón del Faraón y no dejó marchar a
los hijos de Israel.
21 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–Extiende tu mano hacia el cielo y
que sobrevenga sobre el país de Egipto
una oscuridad tan densa que se pueda
palpar.
22 Extendió, pues, Moisés su mano
hacia el cielo y sobrevino una oscuridad
muy densa sobre el país de Egipto
durante tres días. 23 No se veían unos a
otros durante los tres días y no pudieron
moverse de donde estaban. En cambio,
los hijos de Israel tenían luz en sus
poblados.
24 El Faraón llamó a Moisés y a Aarón
y les dijo:
–Id a dar culto al Señor; que queden
únicamente vuestras ovejas y vuestras
vacas; pueden acompañaros también
vuestros pequeños.
25 Respondió Moisés:
–Aunque tú nos dieras víctimas para
los sacrificios y holocaustos para ofrecerlos
al Señor, nuestro Dios, 26 nuestro
ganado tiene que venir también con nosotros.
No quedará ni una res, porque
de ellos hemos de tomar para dar culto
al Señor, nuestro Dios. Además, nosotros
no sabemos con qué hemos de dar
culto al Señor, hasta que lleguemos allí.
27 Pero el Señor endureció el corazón
del Faraón que no quiso dejarles marchar.
28 Y dijo el Faraón a Moisés:
–Sal de mi presencia y guárdate de
volver a ver mi rostro, porque el día que
vuelva a verte ante mí morirás.
29 Respondió Moisés:
–Tal como has dicho, no volveré a
ver tu rostro.
