Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 36:
Before we can move to the next generation, we are reminded of the blessings upon Esau, the elder son of Isaac. Esau has multiple wives and lives in multiple places, eventually settling in Edom, a region of red stone (see 27:39) that matches the red color of Esau at birth (see 25:25). The names Esau and Edom are used interchangeably for both the place and the person. We learn how Esau’s descendants spread through the region, establish cities, and reign as kings.
The Book of Genesis, Chapter 36:
Esau’s Descendants
1 These are the descendants of Esau (that is, Edom).
2 Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the son of Zibeon the Hivite, 3 and Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth. 4 And Adah bore to Esau, Eliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel; 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his cattle, all his beasts, and all his property which he had acquired in the land of Canaan; and he went into a land away from his brother Jacob. 7 For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together; the land of their sojournings could not support them because of their cattle. 8 So Esau dwelt in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom.
9 These are the descendants of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir. 10 These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. 12 (Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife. 13 These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife. 14 These are the sons of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the son f of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: she bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
Chiefs and Kings of Edom
15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz the first-born of Esau: the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16 Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; they are the sons of Adah. 17 These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; they are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife. 18 These are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau’s wife: the chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah; these are the chiefs born of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife. 19 These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. 22 The sons of Lotan were Hori and Heman; and Lotan’s sister was Timna. 23 These are thesons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. 24 These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah; he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. 25 These are the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah. 26 These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27 These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. 28 These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. 29 These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 30 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their clans in the land of Seir.
31 These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites. 32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah. 33 Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead. 34 Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead. 35 Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his stead, the name of his city being Avith. 36 Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead. 37 Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates reigned in his stead. 38 Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead. 39 Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead, the name of his city being Pau; his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
40 These are the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43 Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom), according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession.

2 Esaú tomó sus esposas de entre las
hijas de Canaán: Adá, hija de Elón, el
hitita; Oholibamá, hija de Aná, hijo de
Sibón, el jeveo, 3 y Basemat, hija de Ismael
y hermana de Nebayot. 4 Adá dio
a Esaú Elifaz, Basemat dio a luz a Reuel,

Coré. Éstos son los hijos que le nacieron
a Esaú en tierra de Canaán.

8 Esaú se estableció en la montaña de
Seír. Esaú es Edom.
9 Éstos fueron los descendientes de
Esaú, padre de Edom, en la montaña de
Seír. 10 Éstos son los nombres de los hijos
de Esaú: Elifaz, hijo de Adá, esposa
de Esaú; y Reuel, hijo de Basemat, esposa
de Esaú.
11 Hijos de Elifaz fueron: Temán,
Omar, Sefó, Gatam y Quenaz. 12 Elifaz,
hijo de Esaú, tenía una concubina, Timná,
que le dio a Amalec. Éstos son los
hijos de Adá, esposa de Esaú.
13 Éstos fueron los hijos de Reuel:
Nájat, Zéraj, Samá y Mizá. Éstos son los
hijos de Basemat, mujer de Esaú.
14 Éstos fueron los hijos de Oholibamá,
hija de Aná, hijo de Sibón, esposa
de Esaú. Ésta dio a Esaú Yeús, Yalam y
Coré.
15 Éstos son los jefes de tribu entre
los hijos de Esaú: de los hijos de Elifaz,
primogénito de Esaú, los jefes Temán,
Omar, Sefó, Quenaz, 16 Coré, Gatam yAmalec. Tales son los jefes de tribu de
Elifaz en el país de Edom, todos ellos hijos
de Adá.
17 Éstos son los hijos de Reuel, hijo
de Esaú: los jefes de tribu Nájat, Zéraj,
Samá y Mizá. Tales son los jefes de Reuel
en el país de Edom, todos ellos hijos
de Basemat, esposa de Esaú.
18 Éstos son los hijos de Oholibamá,
esposa de Esaú: los jefes de tribu Yeús,
Yalam y Coré. Tales son los jefes de tribu
descendientes de Oholibamá, hija de
Aná y esposa de Esaú.
19 Éstos son los hijos de Esaú y sus jefes,
es decir, de Edom.
20 Éstos fueron los hijos de Seír, el jorita,
habitantes de aquel país: Lotán, Sobal,
Sibón, Aná, 21 Disón, Éser y Disán; y
éstos son los jefes de los joritas, hijos de
Seír, en el país de Edom. 22 Fueron hijos
de Lotán: Jorí y Hemam; y hermana de
Lotán era Timná. 23 Éstos fueron los hijos
de Sobal: Alván, Manajat, Ebal, Sefó
y Onam. 24 Éstos fueron los hijos de Sibón:
Ayá y Aná. Aná es el que encontró
aguas termales en el desierto cuando
cuidaba los asnos de su padre Sibón.
25 Éstos son los hijos de Aná: Disón y la
hija de Aná, Oholibamá. 26 Éstos son los
hijos de Disón: Jemdán, Esbán, Yitrán
y Querán. 27 Éstos son los hijos de Éser:
Bilhán, Zaaván y Acán. 28 Éstos son los
hijos de Disán: Us y Arán.
29 Éstos son los jefes de tribu de los
joritas: los jefes Lotán, Sobal, Sibón,
Aná, 30 Disón, Éser y Disán. Éstos son
los jefes de los joritas según sus clanes,
en tierra de Seír.
31 Éstos son los reyes que reinaron en
el país de Edom antes de que hubiera un
rey entre los hijos de Israel. 32 En Edom
reinó Bela, hijo de Beor, cuya ciudad se
llamaba Dinhaba. 33 Murió Bela y reinó
en su lugar Yobab, hijo de Zéraj, de Bosrá.
34 Murió Yobab y reinó en su lugar
Jusam, del país de los temanitas. 35 Murió
Jusam y reinó en su lugar Adad, hijo
de Bedad, el que derrotó a Madián en el
campo de Moab; su ciudad se llamaba
Avit. 36 Murió Adad y reinó en su lugar
Samlá, de Masrecá. 37 Murió Samlá y reinó
en su lugar Saúl de Rejobot del río.
38 Murió Saúl y reinó en su lugar Baal–
Janán, hijo de Acbor. 39 Murió Baal–Janán,
hijo de Acbor, y reinó en su lugar
Adar, cuya ciudad se llamaba Pau, y su
mujer Mehetabel, hija de Matred, hijo
de Mezahab.
40 Éstos son los nombres de los jefes
de tribu de Esaú según sus familias, sus
territorios y sus nombres: los jefes Timná,
Alvá, Yetet, 41 Oholibamá, Elá, Pinón,
42 Quenaz, Temán, Mibsar, 43 Magdiel
e Iram.
Tales son los jefes de tribu de Edom
según sus lugares de residencia en el
país que poseían. Esaú es el padre de
Edom.
