Acts of the Apostles 2
Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2:
Chapter 2 continues with the story ten days later, on the annual Jewish feast of Pentecost which brought thousands of Jews from around the Roman Empire to Jereusalem to celebrate the giving of the Law to Israel on Mt. Sinai (vs. 5-12). They encounter God the Spirit in ways reminiscent of the Lord on Mt. Sinai, during the Exodus (vs. 2-4). Peter steps up to interpret what is happening through the lens of Scripture, reflecting on their encounter with the Spirit based on the prophet Joel (vs. 17-21) and Psalm 16 and 1100 (vs. 25-28, 34-36). Peter’s conclusion? Jesus whom they know as raised from the dead is now pouring out the promised Spirit--and they are all seeing and hearing the evidence of it! (vs. 32-33) While the promised Spirit is a gift freely given, the response to this encounter is not passive (vs. 37-41). Every person who is called by the Lord can say “yes” in baptism for the forgiveness of sins and enter into the life of discipleship (vs. 42-47), where individuals are united in the “breaking of the bread” (Eucharist), prayers, teaching, and fellowship (vs. 42).

The Coming of the Holy Spirit
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one an other, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 But Peter, standing with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit
upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 yes, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days
I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth beneath,
blood, and fire, and vapor of
smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned into darkness
and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes,
the great and manifest day.
21 And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,
‘I saw the Lord always before me,
for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
nor let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
29 “Brethren, I may say to you confidently of the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens; but he himself says,
‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,
35 till I make your enemies a stool for your feet.’
36 Let all the house of Israel there fore know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
The First Converts
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him.” 40 And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they held steadfastly to the apostles’ teaching and fellow ship, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.
Life among the Believers
43 And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, at tending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Being "cut to the heart" (2:37), they sought baptism. The second conversion is marked by tears of repentance (see CCC 1429). Lord, grant me the grace to be cut to the heart: for what do I still need to repent, Lord?

1 Al cumplirse el día de Pentecostés,
estaban todos juntos en un mismo
lugar. 2 Y de repente sobrevino del cielo
un ruido, como de un viento que irrumpe
impetuosamente, y llenó toda la casa
en la que se hallaban. 3 Entonces se les
aparecieron unas lenguas como de fuego,
que se dividían y se posaban sobre
cada uno de ellos. 4 Quedaron todos llenos
del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a
hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu
les hacía expresarse.
5 Habitaban en Jerusalén judíos, hombres
piadosos venidos de todas las naciones

aquel ruido se reunió la multitud y quedó
perpleja, porque cada uno les oía hablar
en su propia lengua. 7 Estaban asombrados
y se admiraban diciendo:
–¿Es que no son galileos todos estos
que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es, pues,
que nosotros les oímos cada uno en
nuestra propia lengua materna?
9 »Partos, medos, elamitas, habitantes
de Mesopotamia, de Judea y Capadocia,
del Ponto y Asia, 10 de Frigia y
Panfilia, de Egipto y la parte de Libia
próxima a Cirene, forasteros romanos,
11 así como judíos y prosélitos, cretenses
y árabes, les oímos hablar en nuestras
propias lenguas las grandezas de
Dios.
12 Estaban todos asombrados y perplejos,
diciéndose unos a otros:
–¿Qué puede ser esto?
13 Otros, en cambio, decían burlándose:
–Están bebidos.
Entonces Pedro, de pie con los once,
alzó la voz para hablarles así:
–Judíos y habitantes todos de Jerusalén,
entended bien esto y escuchad
atentamente mis palabras. 15 Éstos no
están borrachos, como suponéis vosotros,
pues es la hora tercia del día, 16 sino
que está ocurriendo lo que se dijo por el
profeta Joel:
17 Sucederá en los últimos días, dice
Dios,
que derramaré mi Espíritu sobre toda
carne,
y profetizarán vuestros hijos y vuestras
hijas,
y vuestros jóvenes tendrán visiones,
y vuestros ancianos soñarán sueños.
18 Y sobre mis siervos y sobre mis siervas
derramaré mi Espíritu en aquellos
días,
y profetizarán.
19 Realizaré prodigios arriba en el cielo
y señales abajo en la tierra,
sangre, fuego y nubes de humo.
20 El sol se convertirá en tinieblas
y la luna en sangre,
antes de que llegue
el día grande y manifiesto del Señor.
21 Y sucederá
que todo el que invoque el nombre del
Señor
se salvará.
Israelitas, escuchad estas palabras:
a Jesús Nazareno, hombre acreditado
por Dios ante vosotros con milagros,
prodigios y señales, que Dios
realizó entre vosotros por medio de él,
como bien sabéis, 23 a éste, que fue entregado
según el designio establecido
y la presciencia de Dios, le matasteis
clavándole en la cruz por mano de los
impíos. 24 Pero Dios le resucitó rompiendo
las ataduras de la muerte, porque
no era posible que ésta lo retuviera
bajo su dominio. 25 En efecto, David
dice de él:
Tenía siempre presente al Señor ante
mis ojos,
porque está a mi derecha, para que
yo no vacile.
26 Por eso se alegró mi corazón
y exultó mi lengua,
y hasta mi carne descansará en la esperanza;
27 porque no abandonarás mi alma en
los infiernos,
ni dejarás que tu Santo vea la corrupción.
28 Me diste a conocer los caminos de
la vida
y me llenarás de alegría con tu presencia.
29 »Hermanos, permitidme que os
diga con claridad que el patriarca David
murió y fue sepultado, y su sepulcro
se conserva entre nosotros hasta el día
de hoy. 30 Pero como era profeta y sabía
que Dios le había jurado solemnemente
que sobre su trono se sentaría un fruto de
sus entrañas, 31 lo vio con anticipación y
habló de la resurrección de Cristo, que
ni fue abandonado en los infiernos ni su
carne vio la corrupción.
32 »A este Jesús le resucitó Dios, y
de eso todos nosotros somos testigos.
33 Exaltado, pues, a la diestra de Dios, y
recibida del Padre la promesa del Espíritu
Santo, ha derramado esto que vosotros
veis y oís. 34 Porque David no subió
a los cielos, y sin embargo exclama:
Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
«Siéntate a mi derecha,
35 hasta que ponga a tus enemigos
como escabel de tus pies».
36 »Por tanto, sepa con seguridad
toda la casa de Israel que Dios ha constituido
Señor y Cristo a este Jesús, a quien
vosotros crucificasteis.
Al oír esto se dolieron de corazón y les
dijeron a Pedro y a los demás apóstoles:
–¿Qué tenemos que hacer, hermanos?
38 Pedro les dijo:
–Convertíos, y que cada uno de vosotros
se bautice en el nombre de Jesucristo
para perdón de vuestros pecados,
y recibiréis el don del Espíritu Santo.
39 Porque la promesa es para vosotros,
para vuestros hijos y para todos los que
están lejos, para todos los que quiera
llamar el Señor Dios nuestro.
40 Con otras muchas palabras dio
testimonio y les exhortaba diciendo:
–Salvaos de esta generación perversa.
41 Ellos aceptaron su palabra y fueron
bautizados; y aquel día se les unieron
unas tres mil almas.
42 Perseveraban asiduamente en la
doctrina de los apóstoles y en la comunión,
en la fracción del pan y en las oraciones.
43 El temor sobrecogía a todos, y
por medio de los apóstoles se realizaban
muchos prodigios y señales. 44 Todos los
creyentes estaban unidos y tenían todas
las cosas en común. 45 Vendían las posesiones
y los bienes y los repartían entre
todos, según las necesidades de cada
uno. 46 Todos los días acudían al Templo
con un mismo espíritu, partían el pan
en las casas y comían juntos con alegría
y sencillez de corazón, 47 alabando a
Dios y gozando del favor de todo el pueblo.
Todos los días el Señor incorporaba
a los que habían de salvarse.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Al ser "cortados hasta el corazón" (2:37), buscaron el bautismo. La segunda conversión está marcada por las lágrimas de arrepentimiento (véase el CIC 1429). Señor, concédeme la gracia de ser cortado hasta el corazón: ¿Señor, de qué tengo que arrepentirme todavía?
