Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Luke, Chapter 12:
Even as some Pharisees and scholars of the Law seek to entrap Jesus (11:54), the crowds attracted to Jesus continue to grow, so large they are on the verge of trampling one another! (vs. 1) Jesus preaches to his many disciples among the multitudes, warning them to not become hypocrites, with a “good” outward appearance but corrupt heart, as some Pharisees have (vs. 2-3). Jesus declares God’s faithfulness, that all things can be forgiven for those open to the convicting Holy Spirit, the Spirit who will teach and protect them (vs. 8-12). After an interruption that Jesus responds to with a parable (vs. 13-21), he returns to teaching his many followers in the crowd, assuring them that relying on the Father’s love and care is an antidote to the anxiety of self-reliance--God is ready to “put on his apron” and “serve” His servants (vs. 22-40). Jesus is ready to accomplish his baptism into death that brings the ultimate victory of resurrection, but in the meantime, his existence causes division between those who recognize the signs (vs. 54-56) and those who do not (vs. 49-53).

A Warning against Hypocrisy
1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the multitude had gathered together that they trod upon one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3 Whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
Whom to Fear
4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
8 “And I tell you, every one who acknowledges me before men, the Son of man also will acknowledge before the angels of God; 9 but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And every one who speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how or what you are to answer or what you are to say; 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 One of the multitude said to him, “Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take heed, and be ware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Do Not Be Anxious
22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on. 23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and to morrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. 30 For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his p kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well.
32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms; pro vide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
The Necessity of Watchfulness
35 “Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will put on his apron and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have been awake and would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
The Faithful and the Unfaithful Servant
41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. 44 Truly I tell you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. 48 But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.
Jesus the Cause of Division
49 “I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for hence forth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Interpreting the Present Time
54 He also said to the multitudes, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
Settling with Your Accuser
57 “And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper.”

1 En esto, habiéndose reunido una
muchedumbre de miles de personas,
hasta atropellarse unos a otros, comenzó a
decir sobre todo a sus discípulos:
–Guardaos de la levadura de los fariseos,
que es la hipocresía. 2 Nada hay
oculto que no sea descubierto, ni secreto
que no llegue a saberse. 3 Porque
cuanto hayáis dicho en la oscuridad
será escuchado a la luz; cuanto hayáis
hablado al oído bajo techo será pregonado
sobre los terrados.
4 »A vosotros, amigos míos, os digo:
no tengáis miedo a los que matan el
cuerpo y después de esto no pueden
hacer nada más. 5 Os enseñaré a quién
tenéis que temer: temed al que después
de dar muerte tiene potestad para arrojar
en el infierno. Sí, os digo: temed a
éste. 6 ¿No se venden cinco pajarillos
por dos ases? Pues bien, ni uno solo de
ellos queda olvidado ante Dios. 7 Aún
más, hasta los cabellos de vuestra cabeza
están todos contados. No tengáis
miedo: valéis más que muchos pajarillos.
8 »Os digo, pues: a todo el que me
confiese delante de los hombres, también
el Hijo del Hombre le confesará delante
de los ángeles de Dios. 9 Pero el que
me niegue ante los hombres, será negado
ante los ángeles de Dios.
10 »A todo el que diga una palabra
contra el Hijo del Hombre se le perdonará;
pero al que blasfeme contra el Espíritu
Santo no se le perdonará.
11 »Cuando os lleven a las sinagogas,
y ante los magistrados y las autoridades,
no os preocupéis de cómo defenderos,
o qué tenéis que decir, 12 porque el Espíritu
Santo os enseñará en aquella hora
qué es lo que hay que decir.
13 Uno de entre la multitud le dijo:
–Maestro, di a mi hermano que reparta
la herencia conmigo.
14 Pero él le respondió:
–Hombre, ¿quién me ha constituido
juez o encargado de repartir entre vosotros?
15 Y añadió:
–Estad alerta y guardaos de toda
avaricia; porque aunque alguien tenga
abundancia de bienes, su vida no depende
de lo que posee.
16 Y les propuso una parábola diciendo:
–Las tierras de cierto hombre rico
dieron mucho fruto. 17 Y se puso a pensar
para sus adentros: «¿Qué puedo hacer,
ya que no tengo dónde guardar mi
cosecha?» 18 Y se dijo: «Esto haré: voy
a destruir mis graneros, y construiré
otros mayores, y allí guardaré todo mi
trigo y mis bienes. 19 Entonces le diré a
mi alma: “Alma, ya tienes muchos bienes
almacenados para muchos años.
Descansa, come, bebe, pásalo bien”».
20 Pero Dios le dijo: «Insensato, esta misma
noche te van a reclamar el alma; lo
que has preparado, ¿para quién será?»
21 Así ocurre al que atesora para sí y no
es rico ante Dios.
22 Les dijo a sus discípulos:
–Por eso os digo: no estéis preocupados
por vuestra vida: qué vais a comer;
o por vuestro cuerpo: con qué os vais a vestir.
23 Porque la vida vale más que el alimento,
y el cuerpo más que el vestido.
24 Fijaos en los cuervos: no siembran
ni siegan; no tienen despensa ni granero,
pero Dios los alimenta. ¡Cuánto más
valéis vosotros que los pájaros! 25 ¿Quién
de vosotros por mucho que cavile puede
añadir un codo a su estatura? 26 Si no podéis
ni lo más pequeño, ¿por qué os preocupáis
por las demás cosas? 27 Contemplad
los lirios, cómo crecen; no se fatigan
ni hilan, y yo os digo que ni Salomón en
toda su gloria pudo vestirse como uno
de ellos. 28 Y si a la hierba del campo, que
hoy es y mañana se echa al horno, Dios
la viste así, ¡cuánto más a vosotros, hombres
de poca fe! 29 Así, vosotros no andéis
buscando qué comer o qué beber, y no
estéis inquietos. 30 Por todas esas cosas se
afanan las gentes del mundo. Bien sabe
vuestro Padre que estáis necesitados de
ellas. 31 Buscad más bien su Reino, y esas
cosas se os añadirán.
32 »No temáis, pequeño rebaño, porque
vuestro Padre ha tenido a bien daros
el Reino. 33 Vended vuestros bienes y
dad limosna. Haceos bolsas que no envejecen,
un tesoro que no se agota en el
cielo, donde el ladrón no llega ni la polilla
corroe. 34 Porque donde está vuestro
tesoro, allí estará vuestro corazón.
35 »Tened ceñidas vuestras cinturas y
encendidas las lámparas, 36 y estad como
quienes aguardan a su amo cuando
vuelve de las nupcias, para abrirle al instante
en cuanto venga y llame. 37 Dichosos
aquellos siervos a los que al volver
su amo los encuentre vigilando. En verdad
os digo que se ceñirá la cintura, les
hará sentar a la mesa y acercándose les
servirá. 38 Y si viniese en la segunda vigilia
o en la tercera, y los encontrase así,
dichosos ellos. 39 Sabed esto: si el dueño
de la casa conociera a qué hora va a llegar
el ladrón, no permitiría que se horadase
su casa. 40 Vosotros estad también
preparados, porque a la hora que menos
penséis vendrá el Hijo del Hombre.
41 Y le preguntó Pedro:
–Señor, ¿dices esta parábola por nosotros
o por todos?
42 El Señor respondió:
–¿Quién es, pues, el administrador
fiel y prudente a quien el amo pondrá al
frente de la casa para dar la ración adecuada
a la hora debida? 43 Dichoso aquel
siervo a quien su amo cuando vuelva
encuentre obrando así. 44 En verdad
os digo que le pondrá al frente de toda
su hacienda. 45 Pero si ese siervo dijera
en sus adentros: «Mi amo tarda en venir
», y comenzase a golpear a los criados
y criadas, a comer, a beber y a emborracharse,
46 llegará el amo de aquel
siervo el día menos pensado, a una hora
imprevista, lo castigará duramente y le
dará el pago de los que no son fieles.
47 El siervo que, conociendo la voluntad
de su amo, no fue previsor ni actuó
conforme a la voluntad de aquél, recibirá
muchos azotes; 48 en cambio, el que
sin saberlo hizo algo digno de castigo,
recibirá pocos azotes. A todo el que se
le ha dado mucho, mucho se le exigirá,
y al que le encomendaron mucho, mucho
le pedirán.
49 »Fuego he venido a traer a la tierra,
y ¿qué quiero sino que ya arda? 50 Tengo
que ser bautizado con un bautismo,
y ¡qué ansias tengo hasta que se lleve a
cabo! 51 ¿Pensáis que he venido a traer
paz a la tierra? No, os digo, sino división.
52 Pues desde ahora, habrá cinco en
una casa divididos: tres contra dos y dos
contra tres; 53 se dividirán el padre contra
el hijo y el hijo contra el padre, la madre
contra la hija y la hija contra la madre,
la suegra contra la nuera y la nuera
contra la suegra.
Decía a las multitudes:
–Cuando veis que sale una
nube por el poniente, enseguida decís:
«Va a llover», y así sucede. 55 Y cuando
sopla el sur, decís: «Viene bochorno»,
y también sucede. 56 ¡Hipócritas! Sabéis
interpretar el aspecto del cielo y de la
tierra: entonces, ¿cómo es que no sabéis
interpretar este tiempo? 57 ¿Por qué no
sabéis descubrir por vosotros mismos
lo que es justo?
58 »Cuando vayas con tu adversario
al magistrado, procura ponerte de
acuerdo con él en el camino, no sea que
te obligue a ir al juez, y el juez te entregue
al alguacil, y el alguacil te meta en
la cárcel. 59 Te aseguro que no saldrás de
allí hasta que pagues el último céntimo.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"Así, vosotros no andéis buscando qué comer o qué beber, y no estéis inquietos. Por todas esas cosas se afanan las gentes del mundo. Bien sabe vuestro Padre que estáis necesitados de ellas. 31 Buscad más bien su Reino, y esas cosas se os añadirán." (Lk 12: 29-31) ¿Vivo mi vida confiando que Dios proveerá porque me ama mucho o vivo mi vida confiando más en mí mismo(a)?
