Commentary on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 23:
After hearing repeated warnings of disaster, we begin to hear words of hope that lead us toward the Messiah. God condemns the shepherd-leaders who have scattered and destroyed the flock. This symbolizes how the kings and priests were disobedient to God and let Judah be conquered and the people scattered to other nations. God promises that He Himself will gather the flock back to their homeland and place good shepherds over them so that they may thrive in peace. In addition, God will raise up from the descendants of David a king who is a righteous Branch and who will reign in justice and wisdom. God also turns His attention to false prophets who have led the people astray. They sin, preach lies, and find God’s ways burdensome. Because they are not bringing benefits to the people, God will bring them to shame.
A Remnant to Be Restored after Exile
1 “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” says the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. 3 Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, says the Lord.
The Righteous Branch
5 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ 7 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when men shall no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 8 but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.’ Then they shall dwell in their own land.”
False Prophets Denounced
9 Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me,
all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
and because of his holy words.
10 For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns,
and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
Their course is evil,
and their might is not right.
11 “Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
even in my house I have found their wickedness,
says the Lord.
12 Therefore their way shall be to them
like slippery paths in the darkness,
into which they shall be driven and fall;
for I will bring evil upon them
in the year of their punishment,
says the Lord.
13 In the prophets of Samaria I saw an unsavory thing:
they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray.
14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and
walk in lies;
they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
so that no one turns from his wickedness;
all of them have become like Sodom to me,
and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
“Behold, I will feed them with wormwood,
and give them poisoned water to drink;
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has gone forth into all the land.”
16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes; they speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to every one who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”
18 For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
to perceive and to hear his word,
or who has given heed to his word and listened?
19 Behold, the storm of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest;
it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back
until he has executed and accomplished
the intents of his mind. In the latter days you will understand it clearly.
21 “I did not send the prophets, yet they ran;
I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council,
then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
and they would have turned them from their evil way,
and from the evil of their doings.
23 “Am I a God at hand, says the Lord, and not a God afar off? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. 25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’
26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, 27 who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams which they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the Lord. 29 Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer which breaks the rock in pieces? 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who steal my words from one another. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who use their tongues and say, ‘Says the Lord.’ 32 Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them; so they do not profit this people at all, says the Lord.
33 “When one of this people, or a prophet, or a priest asks you, ‘What is the burden of the Lord?’ you shall say to them, ‘You are the burden, and I will cast you off, says the Lord.’ 34 And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and his household. 35 Thus shall you say, every one to his neighbor and every one to his brother, ‘What has the Lord answered?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 36 But ‘the burden of the Lord’ you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man’s own word, and you pervert the words of the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God. 37 Thus you shall say to the prophet, ‘What has the Lord answered you?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’ 38 But if you say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have said these words, “The burden of the Lord,” when I sent to you, saying, “You shall not say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ ” 39 therefore, behold, I will surely lift you up and cast you away from my presence, you and the city which I gave to you and your fathers. 40 And I will bring upon you everlasting reproach and perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.’”

1 «¡Ay de los pastores que pierden y
dispersan las ovejas de mi majada!»
–oráculo del Señor–.
2 Por eso, así dice el Señor, Dios de
Israel, acerca de los pastores que apacientan
a mi pueblo: «Vosotros habéis
dispersado mis ovejas, las habéis ahuyentado,
no habéis cuidado de ellas.
Mirad que Yo mismo me ocuparé de
castigar la maldad de vuestras obras –
oráculo del Señor–. 3 Congregaré los
restos de mis ovejas de todas las tierras
adonde las expulsé, y las haré volver a
sus pastos para que crezcan y se multipliquen.
4 Pondré sobre ellas pastores
que las apacienten, para que no teman
más, ni se espanten, ni falte ninguna –
oráculo del Señor–.
5Mirad que vienen días
–oráculo del Señor–,
en que suscitaré a David un brote
justo,
que rija como rey y sea prudente,
y ejerza el derecho y la justicia en la
tierra.
6En sus días Judá será salvada,
e Israel habitará en seguridad,
y éste será el nombre con que le llamen:
“El Señor, nuestra Justicia”.
7 Por eso, mirad que vienen días –
oráculo del Señor–, en que no se dirá
más: “¡Vive el Señor, que hizo subir a
los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto!”,
8 sino: “¡Vive el Señor, que hizo subir
y que trajo a la descendencia de la
casa de Israel de la tierra del norte y de
todas las tierras donde los había dispersado,
para que habitaran en su tierra!”
».
9Acerca de los profetas.
Se me rompe el corazón dentro de
mí,
se estremecen todos mis huesos,
estoy como un borracho
enajenado por el vino,
a causa del Señor
y de sus palabras santas.
10Pues de adúlteros está lleno el país,
porque por una maldición está de
duelo la tierra,
se han secado los oasis del desierto.
Corren tras la maldad,
su fortaleza no tiene fundamento.
11«Hasta el profeta y el sacerdote son
impíos,
incluso en mi Templo encontré su
perversión
–oráculo del Señor–.
12Por eso, su camino será para ellos
como un resbaladero,
serán empujados a las tinieblas
y caerán en ellas;
les traeré la desgracia
el año de su castigo
–oráculo del Señor–.
13Entre los profetas de Samaría
vi una atrocidad:
profetizaron por Baal
y descarriaron a mi pueblo Israel.
14Pero entre los profetas de Jerusalén
vi algo horrible:
fornicar y caminar en la mentira.
Y apoyaban a los malvados
para que no se convirtiera
nadie de su maldad.
Todos han sido para Mí como Sodoma,
y los que habitan en ella, como Gomorra
».
15Por eso, así dice el Señor de los
ejércitos acerca de los profetas:
«Yo les daré a comer ajenjo
y les haré beber agua envenenada,
porque de los profetas de Jerusalén
salió la impiedad para todo el país».
16 Esto dice el Señor de los ejércitos:
«No escuchéis las palabras de los profetas:
ellos os auguran, os dan falsas esperanzas:
cuentan visiones que salen de su
fantasía, no de la boca del Señor.
17 Persisten en decir a quienes me
desprecian:
“Palabra del Señor: tendréis paz”.
Y a cuantos siguen a su corazón obstinado
les dicen: “Ningún mal os llegará”.
18Pero ¿quién estuvo presente en el
consejo del Señor, y vio u oyó su palabra?
¿Quién prestó oído a su palabra y la
escuchó?
19Mirad el huracán del Señor,
furor que estalla,
torbellino que gira
sobre las cabezas de los impíos.
20No se aplacará el ardor de la ira del
Señor
hasta que realice y cumpla
los designios de su corazón.
Al final de los tiempos
lo entenderéis con claridad.
21Yo no envié a los profetas,
se precipitaron ellos.
Yo no les hablé,
vaticinaron ellos.
22Si hubieran asistido a mi consejo,
habrían anunciado mis palabras a
mi pueblo,
les habrían hecho volver de su mal
camino
y de la malicia de sus obras.
23¿Es que Yo soy sólo Dios de cerca
–oráculo del Señor–,
y no Dios de lejos?
24¿Podrá esconderse alguien en escondrijos
sin que lo vea Yo?
–oráculo del Señor–.
¿No lleno Yo los cielos y la tierra?
25 »Ya oí lo que dijeron los profetas
que vaticinaron mentiras en mi Nombre,
diciendo: “¡Yo he tenido un sueño,
yo he tenido un sueño!”. 26 ¿Hasta cuándo
sucederá en el corazón de los profetas
que vaticinen la mentira, que vaticinen
el embuste de su corazón? 27 Con
los sueños, que se cuentan unos a otros,
pretenden que mi pueblo se olvide de
mi Nombre, como se olvidaron sus padres
de mi Nombre por el de Baal. 28 El
profeta que tenga un sueño, que exponga
su sueño, y el que tenga mi palabra,
que exponga mi palabra, siempre con fidelidad.
¿Qué tiene que ver la paja con el trigo?
–oráculo del Señor–.
29¿No es mi palabra como el fuego
–oráculo del Señor–,
y como martillo que hace añicos la
roca?
30 »Por eso, aquí estoy contra los profetas
–oráculo del Señor– que se plagian
mis palabras unos a otros. 31 Aquí estoy
contra los profetas –oráculo del Señor–
que emplean su lengua para declarar:
“Oráculo”. 32 Aquí estoy contra los que
profetizan sueños mentirosos –oráculo
del Señor–, y los cuentan y descarrían
a mi pueblo con sus mentiras y su jactancia.
Yo nos los envié, ni les di ningún
mandato, ni sirven en absoluto de
provecho a este pueblo –oráculo del Señor–.
33 »Si este pueblo, o un profeta, o un
sacerdote te preguntaran: “¿Cuál es el
encargo del Señor?”, les responderás:
“Vosotros sois la carga”, y Yo os arrojaré
–oráculo del Señor–. 34 Y al profeta, al
sacerdote y al pueblo que diga: “Encargo
del Señor”, Yo le castigaré a ese hombre
y a su casa. 35 Esto habéis de decir
cada uno a su prójimo y a su hermano:
“¿Qué ha respondido el Señor?, ¿qué ha
hablado el Señor?” 36 Pero “Encargo del
Señor” no la mencionaréis más, pues la
“carga” será para cada uno su propia palabra.
Vosotros habéis pervertido las
palabras del Dios vivo, del Señor de los
ejércitos, nuestro Dios. 37 Esto dirás al
profeta: “¿Qué te ha respondido el Señor?”,
y “¿qué te ha hablado el Señor?”.
38 Pero si dijerais: “Encargo del Señor”,
por eso mismo, así dice el Señor: “Puesto
que pronunciáis esta palabra ‘Encargo
del Señor’, después de que os hubiera
dado recado: ‘No digáis: Encargo del
Señor’, 39 por eso, Yo os cargaré en alto, y
os arrojaré de mi presencia, a vosotros y
a la ciudad que di a vuestros padres. 40 Y
echaré sobre vosotros oprobio perpetuo
y perenne ignominia, que nunca se olvidarán”».
