Commentary on The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 3:
God continues to speak through Jeremiah and call the people to return to Him. Using marriage imagery, God reminds them of the spousal-like relationship they have with Him in the covenant. The people, however, are playing the harlot by seeking other lovers. At this point in history, there are two Jewish nations, and God points out that the faithlessness of the northern kingdom, Israel, should be a wake-up call to the southern kingdom, Judah. God offers hope by explaining He will send good shepherds, a metaphor for civic and religious leaders. These shepherds will bring healing to all nations and guide people into repentance and returning to God.
The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 3:
Unfaithful Israel
1 “If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him
and becomes another man’s wife,
will he return to her?
Would not that land be greatly polluted?
You have played the harlot with many lovers;
and would you return to me?
says the Lord.
2 Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see!
Where have you not been lain with?
By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers
like an Arab in the wilderness.
You have polluted the land with your vile harlotry.
3 Therefore the showers have been withheld,
and the spring rain has not come;
yet you have a harlot’s brow, you refuse to be ashamed.
4 Have you not just now called to me,
‘My father, you are the friend of my youth—
5 will he be angry for ever, will he be indignant to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken, but you have done all the
evil that you could."
A Call to Repentance
6 The Lord said to me in the days of King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there played the harlot? 7 And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me’; but she did not return, and her false sister Judah saw it. 8 She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce; yet her false sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the harlot. 9Because harlotry was so light to her, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree. 10 Yet for all this her false sister Judah did not return to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, says the Lord.”
11 And the Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel has shown herself less guilty than false Judah. 12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say,
‘Return, faithless Israel,
says the Lord. I will not look on you in anger,
for I am merciful,
says the Lord; I will not be angry for ever.
13 Only acknowledge your guilt,
that you rebelled against the
Lord your God and scattered your favors among strangers under every green tree,
and that you have not obeyed my voice,
says the Lord.
14 Return, O faithless children,
says the Lord; for I am your master;
I will take you, one from a city and two from a family,
and I will bring you to Zion.
15 “‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16And when you have multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, says the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind, or be remembered, or missed; it shall not be made again. 17 At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18 In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.
19 “‘I thought how I would set you among my sons,
and give you a pleasant land,
a heritage most beauteous of all nations.
And I thought you would call me, My Father,
and would not turn from following me.
20 Surely, as a faithless wife leaves her husband,
so have you been faithless to me, O house of Israel,
says the Lord.’”
21 A voice on the bare heights is heard,
the weeping and pleading of Israel’s sons,
because they have perverted their way,
they have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 “Return, O faithless sons,
I will heal your faithlessness.”
“Behold, we come to you; for you are the Lord our God.
23 Truly the hills are a delusion, the orgies on the mountains.
Truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.
24 “But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us; for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day; and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

1Se dice: «Si un hombre repudia a su
mujer
y ella se separa
y llega a ser de otro hombre,
¿volverá de nuevo a ella?,
¿no habrá quedado esa tierra
completamente profanada?».
Pues tú, que has fornicado con muchos
amigos,
¿vas a volver a Mí?
–oráculo del Señor–.
2Alza tus ojos a las colinas y mira:
¿dónde no fuiste deshonrada?
Te sentabas junto a los caminos a esperarles
como árabe en el desierto,
y profanaste la tierra
con tus fornicaciones y tu malicia.
3Se retrajeron las lluvias tempranas,
no hubo lluvias tardías,
pero tú tenías el descaro de una ramera,
no te sentías avergonzada.
4Y ahora me dices: «Padre mío,
Tú eres el amor de mi juventud.
5¿Guardará siempre rencor?,
¿lo conservará eternamente?».
Así hablas, mientras haces
las maldades que puedes.
Israel y Judá, dos hermanas infieles
6En los días del rey Josías el Señor
me dijo:
–¿Has visto lo que ha hecho la infiel
Israel? Se iba por todo monte alto y bajo
todo árbol frondoso a prostituirse allí.
7Y Yo me decía: «Después de hacer todo
eso, volverá a Mí». Pero no volvió. Su
pérfida hermana Judá lo vio. 8Vio que
Yo había repudiado a la infiel Israel por
todos sus adulterios y le había dado su
libelo de repudio. Pero su pérfida hermana
Judá no tuvo miedo, sino que fue
y se prostituyó ella también. 9Tanto que,
por la frivolidad de su fornicación, pro-
fanó la tierra. Cometió adulterio con la
piedra y con el leño. 10Pero, a pesar de
todo eso, su pérfida hermana Judá no
volvió a Mí de corazón sino de mentira
–oráculo del Señor–.
11Entonces me dijo el Señor:
–Mejor se ha portado la infiel Israel
que la pérfida Judá.
12Anda y pregona estas palabras hacia
el norte, y di:
–¡Vuelve, infiel Israel!
–oráculo del Señor–.
No apartaré de vosotros mi rostro,
porque soy misericordioso
–oráculo del Señor–;
no guardaré siempre rencor.
13Basta que reconozcas tu culpa,
que te has rebelado contra el Señor,
tu Dios,
y has prodigado tus amores con extraños,
bajo cualquier árbol frondoso,
sin escuchar mi voz
–oráculo del Señor–.
14»Volved, hijos descastados, –oráculo
del Señor– que Yo soy vuestro amo.
Os tomaré, a uno de cada ciudad, y dos
de cada tribu, y os traeré a Sión. 15Os
daré pastores según mi corazón, que
os apacienten con saber e inteligencia.
16Cuando os multipliquéis y deis fruto
en el país, en aquellos días –oráculo del
Señor–, no mencionarán ya el arca de la
alianza del Señor, ni se les vendrá a la
memoria, ni la recordarán, ni la echarán
de menos, ni se hará otra. 17En aquel
tiempo llamarán a Jerusalén «Trono del
Señor». Todas las naciones acudirán a
ella, a Jerusalén, en el Nombre del Señor,
y no seguirán a su perverso y obstinado
corazón. 18En aquellos días, la casa
de Judá irá con la casa de Israel, y llegarán
juntos desde la tierra del norte a la
tierra que di en heredad a vuestros padres.
La conversión definitiva
19Yo me decía:
«¿Cómo voy a ponerte entre mis hijos,
y darte una tierra de delicias,
la heredad más hermosa de las naciones?
».
Y me respondía:
«Me llamaréis Padre mío,
y no dejaréis de seguirme.
20Pero, lo mismo que traiciona una
mujer a su amante,
así me habéis traicionado, casa de
Israel»

21Una voz se oye sobre las colinas,
llanto y gemidos de los hijos de Israel,
p
orque torcieron su camino,
se olvidaron del Señor, su Dios.
22«¡Volved, hijos descastados,
Yo curaré vuestras infidelidades».
«¡Aquí estamos. A Ti venimos,
porque Tú eres el Señor, nuestro
Dios!
23En verdad, mentirosas son las colinas,
el bullicio de los montes.
En verdad, en el Señor, nuestro Dios,
está la salvación de Israel.
24La vergüenza devoró el esfuerzo de
nuestros padres
desde nuestra juventud,
sus rebaños y sus reses,
sus hijos y sus hijas.
25Nos acostaremos con nuestra vergüenza
y nos taparemos con nuestra ignominia,
pues hemos pecado contra el Señor,
nuestro Dios,
nosotros y nuestros padres,
desde nuestra juventud hasta hoy,
y no hemos escuchado la voz del Señor,
nuestro Dios».

A través del profeta Jeremías, el Señor llamó a las personas sin fe de Israel para que se arrepintieran y se convirtieran en fieles seguidores una vez más. Señor, ¿en qué áreas de mi vida he perdido mi fe y confianza en tí?
