Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 10:
Paul continues to address the community’s question (8:1) of how Christians should deal with living in a society where marketplaces and meals shared with others are filled with the possibility of food that had been offered to idols. Now Paul offers another way to view this question, through the lens of Israel’s experiences. Despite having experienced the power of God in the crossing of the Red Sea and through supernatural manna in the wilderness, Israel still succumbed to temptation (vs. 1-13). As an application to the question at hand, Christians then should not think that because they participate in the supernatural food of the Eucharist, they are immune to temptation (vs. 16-22). Paul concludes this three-chapter answer to the question from the Church in Corinth in verses 23-31. In this situation where none of the choices are sinful, a Christian should discern their practice based on the situation, being aware of one’s own conscience and the impacts on others, especially non-believers-- “whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (vs. 32).

1 I want you to know, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same supernatural food 4 and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless with most of them God was not pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to dance.” 8 We must not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
14 Therefore, my beloved, shun the worship of idols. 15 I speak as to sensible men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

23“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28(But if some one says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then out of consideration for the man who informed you, and for conscience’ sake—29 I mean his conscience, not yours—do not eat it.) For why should my liberty be determined by another man’s scruples? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the Church of God, 33 just as I try to please all men in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.
Daily Lectio Divina Question:
In today's reading, St. Paul tells us that God will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but will also provide the escape from that temptation. When I am tempted, do I try to overcome the temptation on my own? Or do I quickly turn to the Lord in prayer to "escape" from the temptation? In planning for the inevitable temptation to come, what can I do now to better prepare to think of the Lord and ask for his help?

10 1 No quiero que ignoréis, hermanos,
que nuestros padres estuvieron todos
bajo la nube, y todos cruzaron el mar, 2 y
para unirse a Moisés todos fueron bautizados
en la nube y en el mar, 3 y todos comieron
el mismo alimento espiritual, 4 y todos
bebieron la misma bebida espiritual; porque
bebían de la roca espiritual que los seguía,
y la roca era Cristo.
5 Pero la mayoría de ellos no agradó
a Dios, puesto que cayeron muertos en
el desierto.
6 Estas cosas sucedieron como en figura
para nosotros, para que no codiciemos
lo malo como lo codiciaron
ellos. 7 Y no os hagáis idólatras como
algunos de ellos, según está escrito: Se
sentó el pueblo a comer y beber, y se levantaron
para divertirse; 8 ni forniquemos,
como algunos de ellos fornicaron,
y murieron en un solo día veintitrés mil;
9 ni tentemos al Señor, como lo tentaron
algunos de ellos, y perecieron víctimas
de las serpientes; 10 ni murmuréis, como
algunos de ellos murmuraron, y perecieron
a manos del exterminador. 11 Todas
estas cosas les sucedían como en figura;
y fueron escritas para escarmiento
nuestro, para quienes ha llegado la plenitud
de los tiempos. 12 Por tanto, el que
piense estar en pie, que tenga cuidado
de no caer. 13 No os ha sobrevenido ninguna
tentación que supere lo humano, y
fiel es Dios, que no permitirá que seáis
tentados por encima de vuestras fuerzas;
antes bien, con la tentación, os dará
también el modo de poder soportarla
con éxito.
14 Por todo esto, amadísimos míos,
huid de la idolatría. 15 Os hablo como
a prudentes. Juzgad vosotros mismos
lo que digo: 16 el cáliz de bendición que
bendecimos ¿no es la comunión de la
sangre de Cristo? El pan que partimos
¿no es la comunión del Cuerpo de Cristo?
17 Puesto que el pan es uno, muchos
somos un solo cuerpo, porque todos
participamos de un solo pan. 18 Mirad
a Israel, según la carne: los que comen
de las víctimas ¿no entran en comunión
con el altar?
19 ¿Qué digo entonces? ¿Que lo sacrificado
a los ídolos es algo? ¿O que
el ídolo es algo? 20 Eso no. Sin embargo,
lo que sacrifican los gentiles, a los demonios
lo sacrifican y no a Dios. Y no
quiero que vosotros entréis en comunión
con los demonios. 21 No podéis beber
el cáliz del Señor y el cáliz de los demonios;
no podéis participar de la mesa
del Señor y de la mesa de los demonios.
22 ¿O queremos provocar la ira del Señor?
¿Acaso somos más fuertes que él?
10 23 «Todo es lícito». Pero no todo conviene.
«Todo es lícito». Pero no todo edifica.
24 Que nadie busque su provecho,
sino el de los demás. 25 Comed todo lo
que se vende en el mercado, sin más
averiguaciones por motivos de conciencia,
26 porque del Señor es la tierra y todo
cuanto la llena.
27 Si os invita algún infiel y queréis
ir, comed todo lo que os ponga sin más
averiguaciones por motivos de conciencia.
28 Pero si alguno os dijera: «Esto es
animal sacrificado a los ídolos», entonces
no comáis, por causa del que os lo
ha advertido, y por motivos de conciencia;
29 no me refiero a la conciencia propia,
sino a la del otro. Pero ¿por qué mi
libertad va a ser juzgada por la conciencia
ajena? 30 Si yo participo en una comida
dando gracias a Dios, ¿por qué voy
a ser reprendido por aquello por lo que
doy gracias?
31 En fin, tanto si coméis, como si
bebéis, o hacéis cualquier otra cosa, hacedlo
todo para gloria de Dios. 32 No
seáis escándalo para los judíos, ni para
los griegos, ni para la Iglesia de Dios,
33 como también yo agrado a todos en
todo, sin buscar mi conveniencia sino
la de todos los demás, para que se salven.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
En la lectura de hoy, San Pablo nos dice que Dios no va a dejar que seas tentado(a) más allá de tus fuerzas, y también te va a proporcionar el escape de dicha tentación. Cuando soy tentado(a), ¿trato de vencer la tentación por mí mismo(a)? o ¿rápidamente me dirijo al Señor en oración para "escapar" de la tentación? Planeando para el advenimiento de la tentación que es inevitable, ¿qué puedo hacer ahora para prepararme mejor para pensar en el Señor y pedirle su ayuda?
