Commentary on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 12: :
The sabbath, circumcision, and the dietary laws were the three major outward markings of the Jewish way of life. The sabbath was more than the day the Jews set aside for rest and to worship God—it stood as a sign of the Israelites’ covenant with God. As God rested from his work on the sabbath he mandated that his people also were to avoid certain kinds of work. Over the years, Jewish religious teachers developed laws that functioned as “fences” around the Torah to help people avoid any danger of breaking the commandment pertaining to the sabbath. These highly detailed laws, if obeyed, helped ensure respect for the holiness of the sabbath. By the time of Jesus, 39 types of work were forbidden on the sabbath. When Jesus’ disciples are observed picking heads of grain to eat, they’re accused of breaking the sabbath because their action is viewed as equivalent to harvesting the grain, something that would be considered work on the sabbath. Jesus refutes this accusation of the Pharisees in four ways—he reminds his listeners of the example of King David eating consecrated bread; he cites the law concerning priests who don’t profane the sabbath; he explains the correct understanding of compassion and mercy; and he testifies that he himself is “lord of the sabbath.”
The Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 12:
Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.” 3 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.”
The Man with a Withered Hand
9 And he went on from there, and entered their synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man with a withered hand. And they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?” so that they might accuse him. 11 He said to them, “What man of you, if he has one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, whole like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, how to destroy him.
God’s Chosen Servant
15 Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all, 16 and ordered them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not wrangle or cry aloud,
nor will any one hear his voice in the streets;
20 he will not break a bruised reed
or quench a smoldering wick,
till he brings justice to victory;
21 and in his name will the Gentiles hope.”
Jesus and Beelzebul
22 Then a blind and mute demoniac was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the mute man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it they said, “It is only by Be-elzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand; 26 and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Be-elzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
A Tree and Its Fruit
33 “Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! how can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
The Return of the Unclean Spirit
43 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, but he finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and brings with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. So shall it be also with this evil generation.”
The True Kindred of Jesus
46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren‡ stood outside, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Daily Lectio Divina Question for Today:
Jesus tells his detractors that “if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (28). Jesus is often met with rejection and condemnation. Lord, why am I sometimes cold or even indifferent to your invitation to receive the good news of the kingdom?

1 En aquel tiempo pasaba Jesús un
sábado por entre unos sembrados;
sus discípulos tuvieron hambre y comenzaron
a arrancar unas espigas y a comer. 2 Los
fariseos, al verlo, le dijeron:
–Mira, tus discípulos hacen lo que
no es lícito hacer el sábado.
3 Pero él les respondió:
–¿No habéis leído lo que hizo David
y los que le acompañaban cuando tuvieron
hambre? 4 ¿Cómo entró en la Casa
de Dios y comió los panes de la proposición,
que no les era lícito comer ni a él
ni a los que le acompañaban, sino sólo a
los sacerdotes? 5 ¿Y no habéis leído en la
Ley que, los sábados, los sacerdotes en
el Templo quebrantan el descanso y no
pecan? 6 Os digo que aquí está el que es
mayor que el Templo. 7 Si hubierais entendido
qué sentido tiene: Misericordia
quiero y no sacrificio, no habríais condenado
a los inocentes. 8 Porque el Hijo del
Hombre es señor del sábado.
9 Cuando salió de allí, entró en su sinagoga
10 donde había un hombre que
tenía una mano seca. Y le interrogaban
para acusarle:
–¿Es lícito curar en sábado?
11 Él les respondió:
–¿Quién de vosotros, si tiene una
oveja, y el sábado se le cae dentro de
un hoyo, no la agarra y la saca? 12 Pues
cuánto más vale un hombre que una
oveja. Por tanto, es lícito hacer el bien
en sábado.
13 Entonces le dijo al hombre:
–Extiende tu mano.
Y la extendió y quedó sana como la
otra.
14 Al salir, los fariseos se pusieron de
acuerdo contra él, para ver cómo perderle.
15 Jesús, sabiéndolo, se alejó de allí,
y le siguieron muchos y los curó a todos,
16 y les ordenó que no le descubriesen,
17 para que se cumpliera lo dicho
por medio del profeta Isaías:
18 Aquí está mi Siervo, a quien elegí,
mi amado, en quien se complace mi
alma.
Pondré mi Espíritu sobre él
y anunciará la justicia a las naciones.
19 No disputará ni gritará,
nadie oirá su voz en las plazas.
20 No quebrará la caña cascada,
ni apagará la mecha humeante,
hasta que haga triunfar la justicia.
21 Y en su nombre pondrán su esperanza
las naciones.
22 Entonces le trajeron un endemoniado
ciego y mudo. Y lo curó, de manera
que el mudo hablaba y veía. 23 Y toda
la multitud se asombraba y decía:
–¿No será éste el Hijo de David?
24 Pero los fariseos, al oírlo, dijeron:
–Éste no expulsa los demonios sino
por Beelzebul, el príncipe de los demonios.
25 Jesús, que conocía sus pensamientos,
les replicó:
–Todo reino dividido contra sí mismo
queda desolado, y toda ciudad o
casa dividida contra sí misma no se sostendrá.
26 Si Satanás expulsa a Satanás,
está dividido contra sí mismo. ¿Cómo
entonces se sostendrá su reino? 27 Y si
yo expulso los demonios por Beelzebul,
vuestros hijos ¿por quién los expulsan?
Por eso, ellos serán vuestros jueces.
28 Pero si yo expulso los demonios
por el Espíritu de Dios, es que el Reino
de Dios ha llegado a vosotros. 29 ¿Cómo
puede alguien entrar en la casa de uno
que es fuerte y arrebatarle sus bienes, si
antes no ata al que es fuerte? Sólo entonces
podrá arrebatarle su casa. 30 El
que no está conmigo está contra mí, y
el que no recoge conmigo, desparrama.
31 Por lo tanto, os digo que todo pecado
y blasfemia se les perdonará a los
hombres; pero la blasfemia contra el
Espíritu Santo no será perdonada. 32 A
cualquiera que diga una palabra contra
el Hijo del Hombre se le perdonará;
pero al que hable contra el Espíritu Santo
no se le perdonará ni en este mundo
ni en el venidero.
33 O hacéis bueno el árbol y bueno
su fruto, o hacéis malo el árbol y malo
su fruto; porque por el fruto se conoce
el árbol. 34 Raza de víboras, ¿cómo podéis
decir cosas buenas, siendo malos?
Pues de la abundancia del corazón habla
la boca. 35 El hombre bueno saca del
buen tesoro cosas buenas, pero el hombre
malo saca del tesoro malo cosas malas.
36 Os digo que de toda palabra vana
que hablen los hombres darán cuenta
en el día del Juicio. 37 Por tus palabras,
pues, serás justificado, y por tus palabras
serás condenado.
38 Entonces algunos escribas y fariseos
se dirigieron a él:
–Maestro, queremos ver de ti una
señal.
39 Él les respondió:
–Esta generación perversa y adúltera
pide una señal, pero no se le dará otra
señal que la del profeta Jonás. 40 Igual
que estuvo Jonás en el vientre de la ballena
tres días y tres noches, así estará el
Hijo del Hombre en las entrañas de la
tierra tres días y tres noches. 41 Los hombres
de Nínive se levantarán contra esta
generación en el Juicio y la condenarán:
porque se convirtieron ante la predicación
de Jonás, y daos cuenta de que
aquí hay algo más que Jonás. 42 La reina
del Sur se levantará contra esta generación
en el Juicio y la condenará: porque
vino de los confines de la tierra para oír
la sabiduría de Salomón, y daos cuenta
de que aquí hay algo más que Salomón.
43 Cuando el espíritu impuro ha salido
de un hombre, vaga por lugares
áridos en busca de descanso, pero no
lo encuentra. 44 Entonces dice: «Volveré a
mi casa, de donde salí. Y al llegar la encuentra
desocupada, bien barrida y en orden.
45 Entonces va, toma consigo otros
siete espíritus peores que él, y entrando
se instalan allí, con lo que la situación final
de aquel hombre resulta peor que la
primera. Lo mismo le ocurrirá a esta generación
perversa.
46 Aún estaba él hablando a las multitudes,
cuando su madre y sus hermanos
se hallaban fuera intentando hablar con
él. 47 Alguien le dijo entonces:
–Mira, tu madre y tus hermanos están
ahí fuera intentando hablar contigo.
48 Pero él respondió al que se lo decía:
–¿Quién es mi madre y quiénes son
mis hermanos?
49 Y extendiendo su mano hacia sus
discípulos, dijo:
–Éstos son mi madre y mis hermanos.
50 Porque todo el que hace la voluntad
de mi Padre que está en los cielos,
ése es mi hermano y mi hermana y mi
madre.
