**Bible Commentary:
In the seventh chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus draws a parallel between his followers’ attitudes toward others and the effectiveness of their own prayer lives. Often humans become judgmental of others who appear to be blessed by God despite obvious faults. The attitude that Christians show to their neighbors discloses acceptance or refusal of grace and of divine love. Jesus calls his disciples to recognize the Father’s great love and to extend that love to others—rather than sitting back and judging. Followers of Jesus are to ask, seek, and knock—using a grammatical form that means “keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking.” This type of persistent prayer tests both the rightness and sincerity of human requests. Finally, in Matthew 7:21, Jesus cautions: “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

Judging Others
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

6 “Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you.
Ask, Seek, Knock
7 “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
The Narrow Gate
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
False Prophets
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. 18 A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will know them by their fruits.
Concerning Self-Deception
21 “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’
Hearers and Doers
24 “Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; 25 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; 27 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.”
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus tells us to “ask,” to “seek,” and “knock” (7:7). Father, you sent your Son Jesus to seek me out; to knock at my door and to ask for me. Am I open to being sought by the Lord? What in me might block the Lord from making contact? What are you seeking in me, Lord?

1 No juzguéis para no ser juzgados.
2 Porque con el juicio con que juzguéis
se os juzgará, y con la medida con que midáis
se os medirá.
3 ¿Por qué te fijas en la mota del ojo
de tu hermano, y no reparas en la viga
que hay en el tuyo? 4 O ¿cómo vas a decir
a tu hermano: Deja que saque la mota
de tu ojo, cuando tú tienes una viga en
el tuyo? 5 Hipócrita: saca primero la viga
de tu ojo, y entonces verás con claridad
cómo sacar la mota del ojo de tu hermano.
6 No deis las cosas santas a los perros,
ni echéis vuestras perlas a los cerdos,
no sea que las pisoteen con sus patas
y al revolverse os despedacen.
7 Pedid y se os dará; buscad y encontraréis;
llamad y se os abrirá. 8 Porque
todo el que pide, recibe; y el que
busca, encuentra; y al que llama, se le
abrirá.
9 ¿Quién de entre vosotros, si un
hijo suyo le pide un pan, le da una piedra?
10 ¿O si le pide un pez le da una serpiente?
11 Pues si vosotros, siendo malos,
sabéis dar a vuestros hijos cosas buenas,
¿cuánto más vuestro Padre que está en
los cielos dará cosas buenas a los que se
lo pidan?
12 Todo lo que queráis que hagan los
hombres con vosotros, hacedlo también
vosotros con ellos: ésta es la Ley y los
Profetas.
13 Entrad por la puerta angosta, porque
amplia es la puerta y ancho el camino
que conduce a la perdición, y son
muchos los que entran por ella. 14 ¡Qué
angosta es la puerta y estrecho el camino
que conduce a la Vida, y qué pocos
son los que la encuentran!
15 Guardaos bien de los falsos profetas,
que se os acercan disfrazados de
oveja, pero por dentro son lobos voraces.
16 Por sus frutos los conoceréis: ¿es
que se recogen uvas de los espinos o higos
de las zarzas? 17 Así, todo árbol bueno
da frutos buenos, y todo árbol malo
da frutos malos. 18 Un árbol bueno no
puede producir frutos malos, ni un árbol
malo producir frutos buenos. 19 Todo
árbol que no da buen fruto se corta y se
arroja al fuego. 20 Por tanto, por sus frutos
los conoceréis.
21 No todo el que me dice: Señor,
Señor, entrará en el Reino de los Cielos,
sino el que hace la voluntad de mi
Padre, que está en los cielos. 22 Muchos
me dirán aquel día: Señor, Señor, ¿no
hemos profetizado en tu nombre, y hemos
expulsado los demonios en tu
nombre, y hemos hecho prodigios en tu
nombre? 23 Entonces yo declararé ante
ellos: Jamás os he conocido: apartaos
de mí, los que obráis la iniquidad.
24 Por lo tanto, todo el que oye estas
palabras mías y las pone en práctica,
es como un hombre prudente que edificó
su casa sobre roca; 25 y cayó la lluvia y
llegaron las riadas y soplaron los vientos:
irrumpieron contra aquella casa,
pero no se cayó porque estaba cimentada
sobre roca.
26 Pero todo el que oye estas palabras
mías y no las pone en práctica es
como un hombre necio que edificó su
casa sobre arena; 27 y cayó la lluvia y llegaron
las riadas y soplaron los vientos:
se precipitaron contra aquella casa, y se
derrumbó y fue tremenda su ruina.
28 Cuando terminó Jesús estos discursos
las multitudes quedaron admiradas
de su enseñanza, 29 porque les enseñaba
como quien tiene potestad y no
como los escribas.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina para el día de hoy
Jesús nos dice que "pidamos", que "busquemos", que "toquemos" (7:7). Padre, tu eniste a tu Hijo Jesús para buscarme: para tocar a mi puerta y a preguntar for me. ¿Estoy abierto(a) ser buscado(a) por el Señor? ¿Qué cosa en mí podría bloquear al Señor para contactarme? ¿Qué estás buscndo en mi Señor?
