The inaugural Bishop’s Cup boys preseason soccer tournament will be held at Lansing Catholic High School on Saturday, August 11, 2018. The event will feature all four of the Diocese of Lansing high schools:
- Lansing Catholic High School
- Lumen Christi Catholic School (Jackson)
- Powers Catholic High School (Flint)
- Fr. Gabriel Richard Catholic High School (Ann Arbor)
“We are truly blessed to have four outstanding Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Lansing and this inaugural, first-of-its-kind event will bring them together to showcase their exceptional gifts both on and off the athletic field,” said Most Rev. Earl Boyea.
These four schools have very strong soccer pedigrees and have had considerable successes recently in the Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament. Powers won the 2017 Division 3 state tournament, beating Lansing Catholic in the regional final on its way to the championship. Father Gabriel Richard was a district finalist in 2017.
“Bringing these quality programs together provides a high level of competition and will offer each coach with an early assessment of their teams as they prepare for the season,” said Lansing Catholic’s Gustavo Flores.
The day will begin at 9:00am with Mass for all teams and their families in the St. Paul the Great Chapel celebrated by Bishop Boyea.
Following morning Mass, both varsity and junior varsity teams will compete in a round-robin format scrimmage. Games will be played at the two soccer fields on campus, including the turf field at the new Cougar Stadium. Varsity games - 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. There will not be an admission charge but there will be a collection, with proceeds going to Diocese of Lansing charities.
