St. Francis Retreat Center's art exhibit

Five artists displayed their art at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt. Revered Timothy Chon, the director for the Ecumenical Center for Arts and Spirituality, exhibited his chalk on paper drawing The Creation. Father Chon stated that God creates with us. We are co-creators. He said his painting goes from chaos to order.Cindy Evans, a parishioner at St. Martha Parish in Okemos, took art classes in college and exhibited her painting The Protector. Evans remarked that she liked to show beauty in nature and the Scripture. She uses water color, mixed media and collages.
Sharan Egan, from St. Gerard Parish in Lansing, works with textiles and woven structure. She paints her own fabrics. To Evans art is a way to connect with God. It is a spiritual experience. Egan’s painting Topsy Turvy is made on soft white textile.
Other artists at the exhibition were Dr. Christine V. Hampton, a Sustaining Pastoral Excellence artist-in-residence, whose art was accepted into ArtPrize 2013, the Grand Rapids Art Exhibition and Competition; and Karen Bell who has a degree in commercial art and layout and has studied watercolor in various workshops. Her artwork is found in many private collections and varies from formal to experimental and from serious to rather humorous.
