Rev James “Mac” Schmitt, Senior Priest of the Diocese of Lansing, entered eternal life on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Fr Schmitt, 90 years old, was ordained in 1931 at St Mary Cathedral, Lansing. During his priesthood he served as associate pastor (parochial vicar) at: St Augustine, Kalamazoo; St Paul, Owosso; St Mary Star of the Sea, Jackson; St Agnes, Flint; and St Robert Bellarmine, Flushing.As a pastor, Father “Mac” served: St John Bosco, Mattawan; St Catherine of Siena, Portage; St Mary, Westphalia; and St Mary, Morrice.
He attained Senior Priest status in 1991, and afterwards assisted at: Good Shepherd, Montrose; Most Holy Trinity, Fowler; St. Mary Cathedral, Lansing; St. Michael, Grand Ledge; St. Thomas Aquinas, East Lansing; and many other parishes when needed.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Mary Cathedral on Monday, January 27. Father Schmitt was interred at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing.
