(l-r) Deacon Tom Fogle, Bishop Boyea, Deacon Mike Murray and Bishop-Emeritus Mengeling process into St. Mary Cathedral for the Mass of Thanksgiving for Pope Benedict XVI.
More than 200 people came to St. Mary Cathedral to participate in a Mass of Thanksgiving for the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Bishop Earl Boyea celebrated the noon Mass, and was joined by Lansing Bishop Emeritus Carl Mengeling, along with a number of priests and deacons of the diocese. In his homily, Bishop Boyea reminded those in attendance that “we are remembering and honoring the ministry of St. Peter, and his successors, all the way to Pope Benedict. God willing, we also remember and celebrate the successors of Benedict.” During a 2:00pm prayer service, the bells in the Cathedral’s Gothic tower pealed for several minutes, marking the end of Benedict’s papacy. The Seat of Peter is now vacant, and will remain so until the College of Cardinals elects a new pontiff during a conclave to be held in March.
