St. Mary School celebrates 125th anniversary

St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Jackson will celebrate a major milestone – its 125th anniversary – as a continuously operated Catholic School using its original campus and school building. The school’s cornerstone was laid in1889 and it opened that October as a secondary school staffed primarily by the Sisters of Charity from Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently, St. Mary is a pre-K through grade six elementary school.
Father Timothy Nelson, pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea, said, “We see the goodness of faith, education and discipline ... and the children know God through their education."
In recognition of its anniversary, on Oct. 24, 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m., there will be a school open-house followed by Mass and a 7 p.m. gala fundraising dinner for $125 per person at the Commonwealth Commerce Center in Jackson. All are invited to attend. To RSVP, contact St. Mary Star of the Sea at 517.784.7184.
