The Most Reverend Earl Boyea, Bishop of Lansing, has named Mrs. Kathryn Gross of Flushing, MI, pictured above, as the new President of Powers Catholic High School, Flint, effective July 1, 2025. Commenting on her appointment, Kate said:
“I am honored to serve our Catholic community as President at Powers Catholic High School. Powers Catholic has an incredible legacy and a bright future! I am grateful to the leadership, staff, alumni, donors, and students who have worked hard to make it a shining example of excellence.”
“It has been a blessing to work for the Powers Catholic family this year. I look forward to advancing our mission by growing community partnerships, resources, and programs, and of course growing disciples of Jesus Christ.”
As President of Powers Catholic High School, Kate Gross will serve as the Chief Executive Officer, providing leadership in areas like enrollment growth, resource management, marketing, alumni and community relations, and financial management. She will also serve as a key liaison between the school, the Board of Trustees, and the Diocese of Lansing.
Powers Catholic High School was founded in 1970. It takes its name from Father Luke M. Powers, a Massachusetts-born Augustinian priest who served as pastor of Saint Matthew Parish in Flint for 37 years until his death in 1970.
The school presently has over 550 students in grades 9–12, who learn within the grand, neo-classical setting of Flint’s historic Fay Hall. Powers aspires to be a school where “Jesus Christ is at the center of all activity” such that it is dedicated to excellence in education while also making disciples of Jesus Christ in a safe and welcoming environment. Tom Maloney, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Lansing, said:
“Kate has proven over her successful career as Catholic school teacher, coach and now in her current role as Director of Advancement that she has the drive, dedication and commitment to our Faith, our families and especially our young people. I am excited to see Kate lead Powers Catholic High School and continue its long-standing tradition of forming the next generation of saints and scholars ready to go out and transform the world for Christ.”
Kate Gross has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Miami University and has also undertaken graduate classes at Spring Arbor University, Michigan.
For the past eight months, Kate has served as Director of Advancement at Powers Catholic High School. Prior to that, she was a teacher at Saint Robert Bellarmine Catholic School in Flushing for 15 years. Kate also served on the Powers Catholic Board of Trustees for four years as well as two other community boards. She has coached middle school sports in the Genesee County Catholic Schools for seven years.
In her role as Director of Advancement, she has been successful in developing relationships with other community organizations that have led to solid partnerships for Powers Catholic, including those involved in building the school’s new All Saints Chapel which is currently in the planning stages for Fall construction. Kate has also worked to develop personal relationships with many current and potential major donors. She is well known in the local community as a champion of Powers Catholic and Catholic schools and as a community builder.
Kate is married to Matt Gross. The couple met at Miami University and have been married for 28 years. Together they have four sons: Sam, Powers Catholic class of ‘19, Owen ‘21, Will ‘25 while Bryce will graduate from Powers next June. The family are parishioners at Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish in Flushing.
