Here are some images, above and below, of Bishop Earl Boyea’s recent visit to Saint Mary in Williamston to celebrate the parish school’s 65th anniversary. Congratulations! Ad multos annos!
“It was a great joy to celebrate the 65th anniversary of our parish's school with Bishop Boyea today,” said parish pastor, Father David Fons, October 18.
“Saint Mary Classical Catholic School is such a great gift to our parish and local community, as we seek to form disciples who serve the Lord in all that they do."
"We thank God today for all the many students, families, teachers, staff, and pastors who have built up and cared for Saint Mary School.”
It was on October 18, 1959, that the late Bishop Joseph Albers of Lansing dedicated Saint Mary School for the purposes of Catholic education. That first year saw 109 students enrolled in the first through seventh grades. The original staff consisted of three Sisters of Saint Joseph from Nazareth College and, as the school grew, more religious sisters joined the staff rankings.
Enrollment at Saint Mary peaked in 1967 with 242 students in first through eighth grades. As student numbers fluctuated over the years, the school decided to discontinue the middle school and added a preschool program. However, the school expansion in 1996 doubled the building’s square footage and included an activity center/gym, new kitchen, library, and additional classroom and office space.
With renewed interest and sustainable enrollment numbers, the middle school was reinstated in 2018 when the school adopted a classical curriculum and initiated an affordable tuition model.
