Watch this short film as Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing challenges school students from across the Diocese of Lansing to become great scholars and great saints.
“Be good athletes, be good scholars, but in the end, be open to what God wants to do in you,” said Bishop Boyea to over 500 students gathered at Saint Mary Cathedral in Lansing, September 16, for the offering of a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit to mark the new school.
“That's the most important thing that we [our Catholic schools] can at least present to you. We can't make you saints. Our schools cannot make you saints. We can only help you to be open to what God wants to do in you. God, bless you all you.”
Bishop Boyea’s homily outlined the principles behind the Diocese of Lansing’s new $70 million capital campaign for Catholic education, Stewardship for Saints and Scholars. The initiative seeks to make Catholic education across the diocese ever more on-mission, affordable, and accessible, while also funding local initiatives.
The Diocese of Lansing contains 36 Catholic schools spread across 10 counties including four regional high schools. In total, diocesan schools educate over 8,400 students. What is more, Diocese of Lansing schools have witnessed a 10% increase in student numbers since 2020. Deo gratias. This year it looks like student numbers may well be up again. Deo volente.
