What to do about teens aging out of foster care?
The second in a series of events called: “Empowering for Change – Community Conversations” – is being hosted by St. Vincent Catholic Charities on Sept. 4 at the Delta Township Library, Elmwood Room. The topic for discussion is “Youth Aging Out of Foster Care.” The event is free, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to come early to register and network. Space is limited, so please reserve your seat(s) by calling 517.323.4734, ext.1202.
The “Community Conversation on Youth Aging Out of Foster Care” will include a presentation from John Seita, Michigan State University professor specializing in social work and youth in foster care. Seita takes his work personally, having survived the foster care system himself. His personal story and the work he is doing at MSU, plus his mentoring program for college students that come from foster care will be part of his presentation. Sieta will be joined on a panel by Janet Kaley of the Michigan Department of Human Service; Pat Baines-Lake of the Lansing Housing Commission; and Jose Carrera, Treatment director at St. Vincent Catholic Charities. Each presenter will help to frame the conversation and then it will be an open discussion to include those attending the event.
