Holy Family Library

Wren and Douglas Spangler, St. Anthony, Hillsdale’s parishioners started the Holy Family Library in 2009. It is their way to keep Catholic literature in circulation. The couple has recycled Catholic books from closed schools in eight states, including seven schools in the Lansing Diocese. They have been sharing these resources – some very rare – with their Catholic community. They have almost 30,000 books available.
Wren shared, “We have rescued books from more than twenty-five closed schools that no longer had a place to keep their books. The first library where we rescued books was in Flint.” Their goal is to get the books back in to circulation.
The couple bought a bookmobile several years ago. Though not currently operational, it is used to store rescued books. Other books are kept in an air-conditioned storage unit. The Douglas also have loaned hundreds of books to the schoolchildren at Sacred Heart School in Hudson.
