Catholic Charities recognizes May as national foster care month

National Foster Care Month, celebrated each May, is a chance to highlight the experiences of the more than 400,000 children in the foster care system nationwide. It also provides an opportunity to educate our community about the ways we can support those youth and work to create a brighter future for them. Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties provides a way for community members to fill those roles by becoming a foster or adoptive parent.“The number of children in the foster care system that aren’t able to stay with their biological families is growing every year. We work hard to provide each one of them with the support system they need to succeed,” says Vicky Schultz, president of Catholic Charities. Currently, more than 700 children in Genesee County are in need of a forever home for a variety of reasons including abuse, neglect and abandonment. Fifty-one of those are in foster homes provided through Catholic Charities. More foster families are needed to provide support and care for all the children searching for a loving family.
Attend a free informational meeting for a unique opportunity to learn about the foster care and adoption processes. Meetings are held each Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Catholic Charities Children’s Center in Flint.
