Bishop thanks outgoing Cristo Rey board members - welcomes new board

As the long-serving members of the Cristo Rey Community Center board of directors complete their dedicated and generous service, on Friday, May 24 Bishop Earl Boyea expressed his deep gratitude.  “These men and women — highly accomplished individuals from both the private sector and the public sector — have provided an important service to the entire mid-Michigan community.  Cristo Rey Community Center is an essential part of the charitable mission of the Catholic Church, and its good works reach into every corner of our community, touching persons of every faith, ethnicity, and state of life.  While these board members are transitioning off following the conclusion of their terms, they certainly will be missed.  I pray that they and their families will enjoy many blessings in the years to come, and I thank them for their many years of service."

Father Fred Thelen, who has assumed a leadership role at the request of Bishop Boyea, announced the names of some of the persons who will be taking the place of the prior board of directors.  He joined in expressing his warm appreciation for the earlier board of directors, each of whom had generously continued to serve even after the expiration of their terms.  Among those appointed are Paul Franco, Noel Garcia (who will chair the board), John Gardner, Art Luna, Andrea Rodriguez, and Celina Garza Wille, Ph.D.  Deacon David Borzenski has also agreed to serve.  Father Thelen noted that these persons have backgrounds in ministry, the university community, law enforcement, the union movement, the telecommunications industry and other vital areas.  He expects additional board members to be named in coming weeks.

Also announced was the selection of interim executive director Jose Lopez.  He will serve while the board of directors begin with Father Thelen the process of selecting a permanent executive director for Cristo Rey Community Center.  No timetable has been set for the selection of a permanent executive director, though Father expressed optimism that the position will soon be posted so that applicants can begin submitting materials to the board's search committee.  He indicated that he hopes a permanent executive director will be selected this summer. Finally, Father Thelen also thanked Bob Vogel for his contributions as the prior interim executive director.

In partnership with a host of private and public entities, Cristo Rey Community Center provides outstanding services to those in need.  As this time of transition continues, Cristo Rey Community Center will continue to nurture and strengthen its many relationships throughout the community, while also reaching out to explore new ways of serving.
