The Beatitudes
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
The Fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets
17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Concerning Anger
21 “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.
Concerning Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Concerning Divorce
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Concerning Swearing Oaths
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from the Evil One.
Concerning Retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
*Daily Lectio Divina Question for Today:
God’s “perfection” (5:48) does not look the same as what the world thinks perfection is. Being “blessed” (5:1–11) in Jesus’ kingdom is much different than the happiness that the world shows us. Lord, in this upside-down kingdom of Yours, where the poor in spirit are blessed, what does being perfect as you are perfect mean for me?

1 Al ver Jesús a las multitudes, subió al
monte; se sentó y se le acercaron sus
discípulos; 2 y abriendo su boca les enseñaba
diciendo:
3 –Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu,
porque suyo es el Reino de los
Cielos.
4 »Bienaventurados los que lloran,
porque serán consolados.
5 »Bienaventurados los mansos, porque
heredarán la tierra.
6 »Bienaventurados los que tienen
hambre y sed de justicia, porque quedarán
saciados.
7 »Bienaventurados los misericordiosos,
porque alcanzarán misericordia.
8 »Bienaventurados los limpios de
corazón, porque verán a Dios.
9 »Bienaventurados los pacíficos,
porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.
10 »Bienaventurados los que padecen
persecución por causa de la justicia,
porque suyo es el Reino de los Cielos.
11 »Bienaventurados cuando os injurien,
os persigan y, mintiendo, digan
contra vosotros todo tipo de maldad
por mi causa. 12 Alegraos y regocijaos,
porque vuestra recompensa será grande
en el cielo: de la misma manera persiguieron
a los profetas de antes de vosotros.
13 »Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra.
Pero si la sal se vuelve sosa ¿con qué se
salará? No vale más que para tirarla fuera
y que la pisotee la gente.
14 »Vosotros sois la luz del mundo.
No puede ocultarse una ciudad situada
en lo alto de un monte; 15 ni se enciende
una luz para ponerla debajo de un celemín,
sino sobre un candelero para que
alumbre a todos los de la casa. 16 Alumbre
así vuestra luz ante los hombres,
para que vean vuestras buenas obras y
glorifiquen a vuestro Padre, que está en
los cielos.
17 »No penséis que he venido a abolir
la Ley o los Profetas; no he venido a
abolirlos sino a darles su plenitud. 18 En
verdad os digo que mientras no pasen el
cielo y la tierra, de la Ley no pasará ni
la más pequeña letra o trazo hasta que
todo se cumpla. 19 Así, el que quebrante
uno solo de estos mandamientos, incluso
de los más pequeños, y enseñe a los
hombres a hacer lo mismo, será el más
pequeño en el Reino de los Cielos. Por
el contrario, el que los cumpla y enseñe,
ése será grande en el Reino de los Cielos.
20 Os digo, pues, que si vuestra justicia no
es mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos,
no entraréis en el Reino de los Cielos.
21 »Habéis oído que se dijo a los antiguos:
No matarás, y el que mate será reo
de juicio.
22 Pero yo os digo: todo el que se llene
de ira contra su hermano será reo de
juicio; y el que insulte a su hermano será
reo ante el Sanedrín; y el que le maldiga
será reo del fuego del infierno. 23 Por
lo tanto, si al llevar tu ofrenda al altar recuerdas
que tu hermano tiene algo contra
ti, 24 deja allí tu ofrenda delante del
altar, vete primero a reconciliarte con tu
hermano, y vuelve después para presentar
tu ofrenda. 25 Ponte de acuerdo cuanto
antes con tu adversario mientras vas
de camino con él; no sea que tu adversario
te entregue al juez y el juez al alguacil
y te metan en la cárcel. 26 Te aseguro
que no saldrás de allí hasta que restituyas
la última moneda.
27 »Habéis oído que se dijo: No cometerás
adulterio. 28 Pero yo os digo que
todo el que mira a una mujer deseándola,
ya ha cometido adulterio en su corazón.
29 Si tu ojo derecho te escandaliza,
arráncatelo y tíralo; porque más te vale
que se pierda uno de tus miembros que
no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al
infierno. 30 Y si tu mano derecha te escandaliza,
córtala y arrójala lejos de ti;
porque más te vale que se pierda uno de
tus miembros que no que todo tu cuerpo
acabe en el infierno.
31 »Se dijo también: Cualquiera que
repudie a su mujer, que le dé el libelo de
repudio. 32 Pero yo os digo que todo el
que repudia a su mujer –excepto en el
caso de fornicación– la expone a cometer
adulterio, y el que se casa con la repudiada
comete adulterio.
33 »También habéis oído que se dijo
a los antiguos: No jurarás en vano, sino
que cumplirás los juramentos que le hayas
hecho al Señor. 34 Pero yo os digo: no
juréis de ningún modo; ni por el cielo,
porque es el trono de Dios; 35 ni por la tierra,
porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni
por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del
Gran Rey. 36 Tampoco jures por tu cabeza,
porque no puedes volver blanco o
negro ni un solo cabello. 37 Que vuestro
modo de hablar sea: «Sí, sí»; «no, no».
Lo que exceda de esto, viene del Maligno.
38 »Habéis oído que se dijo: Ojo por
ojo y diente por diente. 39 Pero yo os digo:
no repliquéis al malvado; por el contrario,
si alguien te golpea en la mejilla
derecha, preséntale también la otra.
40 Al que quiera entrar en pleito contigo
para quitarte la túnica, déjale también
el manto. 41 A quien te fuerce a andar
una milla, vete con él dos. 42 A quien
te pida, dale; y no rehúyas al que quiera
de ti algo prestado.
43 »Habéis oído que se dijo: Amarás a
tu prójimo y odiarás a tu enemigo. 44 Pero
yo os digo: amad a vuestros enemigos
y rezad por los que os persigan, 45 para
que seáis hijos de vuestro Padre que está
en los cielos, que hace salir su sol sobre
buenos y malos, y hace llover sobre justos
y pecadores. 46 Porque si amáis a los
que os aman, ¿qué recompensa tenéis?
¿No hacen eso también los publicanos?
47 Y si saludáis solamente a vuestros hermanos,
¿qué hacéis de más? ¿No hacen
eso también los paganos? 48 Por eso, sed
vosotros perfectos como vuestro Padre
celestial es perfecto.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina para el día de hoy
La "perfección" de Dios (5:48) no es igual a cómo el mundo piensa que es la perfección. Ser "benditos" (5: 1-11) en el reino de Jesús es muy diferente a la felicidad que nos presenta el mundo. Señor, en este reino Tuyo que está de cabeza, en dónde los pobres de espíritu son benditos, ¿qué significa para mí ser perfecto como tú eres perfecto?
