Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Mark, Chapter 3:
In this chapter Mark introduces us to the earthly conflict that the divine Son of God faces. Still in Capernaum, Jesus attracts adversaries (from sects within Judaism that are typically opposed to one another) for healing on the sabbath (vs. 6). Jesus withdraws from the city, toward the Sea of Galilee and up a mountain, calling Twelve to him to be with him and appointed to announce the Gospel and heal--a sharing of Jesus’ ministry (vs. 13-19). Afterward, back in the small city, the opposition continues, now even from those who have made the trip north from Jerusalem (vs. 22). Jesus teaches through these examples that discipleship is not predetermined by one’s religious or cultural affiliation, or even family or origin--it’s a choice God offers to all.

The Man with a Withered Hand
1 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2 And they watched him, to see whether he would heal him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out, and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
A Multitude by the Sea
7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed; also from Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from about Tyre and Sidon a great multitude, hearing all that he did, came to him. 9 And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they should crush him; 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.
Jesus Appoints the Twelve
13 And he went up on the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons: 16 Simon whom he surnamed Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Jesus and Beelzebul
Then he went home; 20 and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his friends heard it, they went out to seize him, for they said, “He is beside himself.” 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him, and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man; then indeed he may plunder his house.
28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—30 for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
The True Kindred of Jesus
31 And his mother and his brethren came; and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting about him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brethren are outside, asking for you.” 33 And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brethren?” 34 And looking around on those who sat about him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brethren! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

1 De nuevo entró en la sinagoga. Había
allí un hombre que tenía la mano seca.
2 Le observaban de cerca por si lo curaba en
sábado, para acusarle. 3 Y le dice al hombre
que tenía la mano seca:
–Ponte de pie en medio.
4 Y les dice:
–¿Es lícito en sábado hacer el bien o
hacer el mal, salvar la vida de un hombre
o quitársela?
Ellos permanecían callados. 5 Entonces,
mirando con ira a los que estaban a
su alrededor, entristecido por la ceguera
de sus corazones, le dice al hombre:
–Extiende la mano.
La extendió, y su mano quedó curada.
6 Nada más salir, los fariseos con los
herodianos llegaron a un acuerdo contra
él, para ver cómo perderle.
7 Jesús se alejó con sus discípulos hacia
el mar. Y le siguió una gran muchedumbre
de Galilea y de Judea. 8 También
de Jerusalén, de Idumea, de más allá del
Jordán y de los alrededores de Tiro y de
Sidón, vino hacia él una gran multitud
al oír las cosas que hacía. 9 Y les dijo a
sus discípulos que le tuviesen dispuesta
una pequeña barca, por causa de la
muchedumbre, para que no le aplastasen;
10 porque sanaba a tantos, que todos
los que tenían enfermedades se le echaban
encima para tocarle. 11 Y los espíritus
impuros, cuando lo veían, se arrojaban
a sus pies y gritaban diciendo:
–¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios!
12 Y les ordenaba con mucha fuerza
que no le descubriesen.
13 Y subiendo al monte llamó a los
que él quiso, y fueron donde él estaba.
14 Y constituyó a doce, para que estuvieran
con él y para enviarlos a predicar
15 con potestad de expulsar demonios:
16 a Simón, a quien le dio el nombre de
Pedro; 17 a Santiago el de Zebedeo y a
Juan, el hermano de Santiago, a quienes
les dio el nombre de Boanerges, es decir,
«hijos del trueno»; 18 a Andrés, a Felipe,
a Bartolomé, a Mateo, a Tomás, a
Santiago el de Alfeo, a Tadeo, a Simón
el Cananeo 19 y a Judas Iscariote, el que
le entregó.
20 Entonces llegó a casa; y se volvió a
juntar la muchedumbre, de manera que
no podían ni siquiera comer. 21 Se enteraron
sus parientes y fueron a llevárselo porque
decían que había perdido el juicio.
22 Y los escribas que habían bajado
de Jerusalén decían:
–Tiene a Beelzebul, y expulsa los demonios
por el príncipe de los demonios.
23 Y convocándolos les decía con parábolas:
–¿Cómo puede Satanás expulsar a
Satanás? 24 Si un reino está dividido en
su interior, ese reino no puede sostenerse;
25 y si una casa está dividida en su interior,
esa casa no podrá sostenerse. 26 Y
si Satanás se levanta contra sí mismo,
entonces se encuentra dividido y no
puede sostenerse, sino que ha llegado su
fin. 27 Pues nadie puede entrar en la casa
de uno que es fuerte y arrebatarle sus
bienes, si antes no ata al que es fuerte.
Sólo entonces podrá arrebatarle su casa.
28 »En verdad os digo que todo se les
perdonará a los hijos de los hombres:
los pecados y cuantas blasfemias profieran;
29 pero el que blasfeme contra el Espíritu
Santo jamás tendrá perdón, sino
que será reo de delito eterno.
30 Porque ellos decían:
–Tiene un espíritu impuro. 31 Vinieron su madre y sus hermanos
y, quedándose fuera, enviaron a llamarlo.
32 Y estaba sentada a su alrededor una
muchedumbre, y le dicen:
–Mira, tu madre, tus hermanos y tus
hermanas te buscan fuera.
33 Y, en respuesta, les dice:
–¿Quién es mi madre y quiénes mis
hermanos?
34 Y mirando a los que estaban sentados
a su alrededor, dice:
–Éstos son mi madre y mis hermanos:
35 quien hace la voluntad de Dios, ése
es mi hermano y mi hermana y mi madre.
