Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Luke, Chapter 21:
Jesus has just concluded a time of teaching in the Temple, and looks up to see a poor woman generously contributing her entire livelihood as a voluntary offering (vs. 1-4), a complete contrast to the hypocrisy of the religious leaders Jesus had warned of (20:45-47). Yet still some in the crowd marvel at the material wealth displayed in the Temple. In response Jesus prophecies the complete destruction of this massive, religiously significant structure! Jesus answers their questions of “when” and “what sign” will indicate this (vs. 7) with warnings to remain faithful, waiting patiently without fear, understanding that “the end will not be at once” (vs. 9). Yet before any of the most visible signs of the end, Jesus’ followers will experience persecution that offers the opportunity to share testimony. And through it all, Jesus promises to give his followers the wisdom to witness, whatever the situation (vs. 15). After all of God’s plan, written in the Scriptures is fulfilled (vs. 22, 24-25), Jesus the Son of Man will come in glory and the final redemption and restoration of the entire cosmos will be at hand (vs. 28).

The Widow’s Offering
1 He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two cop per coins. 3 And he said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4 for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had.”
The Destruction of the Temple Foretold
5 And as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, 6 “As for these things which you see, the days will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” 7 And they asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place?” 8 And he said, “Take heed that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified; for this must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”
Signs and Persecutions
10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11 there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. 13 This will be a time for you to bear testimony. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death; 17 you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.
The Destruction of Jerusalem Foretold
20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in side the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it; 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfil all that is written. 23 Alas for those who are with child and for those who are nursing in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people; 24 they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man
25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; 30 as soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is al ready near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Exhortation to Watchfulness
34 “But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; 35 for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. 36 But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man.” 37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

Jesus spoke to His disciples about signs of the end times, urging them to be vigilant in praying for wisdom, “which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.” How can I come to know God’s truth and wisdom and to be able to speak God’s truth and wisdom into the broken culture in this time and place?

1 Al levantar la vista, vio a unos
ricos que echaban sus ofrendas
en el gazofilacio. 2 Vio también a una
viuda pobre que echaba allí dos monedas
pequeñas, 3 y dijo:
–En verdad os digo que esta viuda
pobre ha echado más que todos; 4 pues
todos estos han echado como ofrenda
algo de lo que les sobra, ella, en cambio,
en su necesidad ha echado todo lo que
tenía para su sustento.
Como algunos le hablaban del Templo,
que estaba adornado con bellas
piedras y ofrendas votivas, dijo:
6 –Vendrán días en los que de esto
que veis no quedará piedra sobre piedra
que no sea destruida.
7 Le preguntaron:
–Maestro, ¿cuándo ocurrirán estas
cosas y cuál será la señal de que están a
punto de suceder?
8 Él dijo:
–Mirad, no os dejéis engañar; porque
vendrán en mi nombre muchos diciendo:
«Yo soy», y «el momento está
próximo». No les sigáis. 9 Cuando oigáis
hablar de guerras y de revoluciones, no
os aterréis, porque es necesario que sucedan
primero estas cosas. Pero el fin
no es inmediato.
10 Entonces les decía:
–Se alzará pueblo contra pueblo y
reino contra reino; 11 habrá grandes terremotos
y hambre y peste en diversos
lugares; habrá cosas aterradoras y grandes
señales en el cielo. 12 Pero antes de
todas estas cosas os echarán mano y os
perseguirán, entregándoos a las sinagogas
y a las cárceles, llevándoos ante
reyes y gobernadores por causa de mi
nombre: 13 esto os sucederá para dar testimonio.
14 Así pues, convenceos de que
no debéis tener preparado de antemano
cómo os vais a defender; 15 porque yo
os daré palabras y sabiduría que no podrán
resistir ni contradecir todos vuestros
adversarios. 16 Seréis entregados incluso
por padres y hermanos, parientes
y amigos, y matarán a algunos de vosotros,
17 y todos os odiarán a causa de mi
nombre. 18 Pero ni un cabello de vuestra
cabeza perecerá. 19 Con vuestra perseverancia
salvaréis vuestras almas.
20 »Cuando veáis a Jerusalén cercada
por ejércitos, sabed que ya se acerca
su desolación. 21 Entonces los que estén
en Judea huyan a los montes, y quienes
estén dentro de la ciudad que se marchen,
y quienes estén en los campos
que no entren en ella: 22 éstos son días
de castigo para que se cumpla todo lo
escrito. 23 ¡Ay de las que estén encintas y
de las que estén criando esos días! Porque
habrá una gran calamidad sobre la
tierra y habrá ira contra este pueblo.
24 Caerán al filo de la espada y serán llevados
cautivos a todas las naciones; y
Jerusalén será pisoteada por los gentiles,
hasta que se cumpla el tiempo de
los gentiles.
25 »Habrá señales en el sol, en la luna
y en las estrellas, y sobre la tierra angustia
de las gentes, consternadas por el
estruendo del mar y de las olas: 26 y los
hombres perderán el aliento a causa del
terror y de la ansiedad que sobrevendrán
al mundo. Porque las potestades de
los cielos se conmoverán. 27 Entonces verán
al Hijo del Hombre que viene sobre
una nube con gran poder y gloria.
28 »Cuando comiencen a suceder estas
cosas, erguíos y levantad la cabeza
porque se aproxima vuestra redención.
Y les dijo una parábola:
–Observad la higuera y todos los
árboles: 30 cuando ya echan brotes, al verlos,
sabéis por ellos que ya está cerca el verano.
31 Así también vosotros, cuando
veáis que suceden estas cosas, sabed que
está cerca el Reino de Dios. 32 En verdad
os digo que no pasará esta generación
sin que todo se cumpla. 33 El cielo y la
tierra pasarán, pero mis palabras no pasarán.
34 »Vigilaos a vosotros mismos, para
que vuestros corazones no estén ofuscados
por la crápula, la embriaguez y los
afanes de esta vida, y aquel día no sobrevenga
de improviso sobre vosotros,
35 porque caerá como un lazo sobre todos
aquellos que habitan en la faz de
toda la tierra. 36 Vigilad orando en todo
tiempo, a fin de que podáis evitar todos
estos males que van a suceder, y estar en
pie delante del Hijo del Hombre.
37 Durante el día enseñaba en el Templo,
y salía a pasar la noche en el monte
llamado de los Olivos. 38 Y todo el pueblo
acudía a él muy de mañana al Templo
para oírle.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Jesús le habló a sus discípulos acerca de los signos del final de los tiempos, invitándolos a estar atentos y orar para pedir sabiduría, “lo que ninguno de sus adversarios podrá resistir o contradecir.” ¿Cómo puedo llegar a conocer la verdad y sabiduría de Dios y ser capaz de transmitir la verdad y sabiduría de Dios en esta cultura rota en este tiempo y lugar?
