Commentary on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 16:
One of the ways in which Jeremiah becomes a witness to God’s message is through his very life. God prohibits him from experiencing the normal activities of getting married, having children, and attending funerals. This is to demonstrate the barrenness of life that God will bring to Judah because the people, for generations, have forsaken Him. There will be death and the people will be hurled from their land. There is hope, however, for after these disasters, God will bring the people back to the land from the various places they have been scattered. This leads to praising God as a strength, stronghold, and refuge, and God making known His own power and might.

Jeremiah’s Celibacy and Message
1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place. 3 For thus says the Lord concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning the mothers who bore them and the fathers who begot them in this land: 4 They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried; they shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.
5 “For thus says the Lord: Do not enter the house of mourning, or go to lament, or bemoan them; for I have taken away my peace from this people, says the Lord, my steadfast love and mercy. 6 Both great and small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried, and no one shall lament for them or cut himself or make himself bald for them. 7 No one shall break bread for the mourner, to comfort him for the dead; nor shall any one give him the cup of consolation to drink for his father or his mother. 8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink. 9 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will make to cease from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
10 “And when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? What is our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’ 11then you shall say to them: ‘Because your fathers have forsaken me, says the Lord, and have gone after other gods and have served and worshiped them, and have forsaken me and have not kept my law, 12 and because you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his stubborn evil will, refusing to listen to me; 13 therefore I will hurl you out of this land into a land which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
God Will Restore Israel
14 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 15 but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the sons of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.’ For I will bring them back to their own land which I gave to their fathers.
16 “Behold, I am sending for many fishers, says the Lord, and they shall catch them; and afterwards I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks. 17 For my eyes are upon all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their iniquity concealed from my eyes. 18 And I will doubly recompense their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.”
19 O Lord, my strength and my stronghold,
my refuge in the day of trouble,
to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth
and say:
“Our fathers have inherited
nothing but lies,
worthless things in which there is no profit.
20 Can man make for himself gods?
Such are no gods!”
21 “Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this once I will make them know my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord.”
*Daily Lectio Divina Question:
In the midst of a warning to heed God’s word, we hear “I will bring them back to the land which I gave their fathers.” (Jer 16:15) God is always seeking ways to bring us back, going so far as to send His only Son and then leaving us the Holy Spirit and the Sacraments. Lord Jesus, how can I take refuge in you today and heed your invitation to closeness?

16 1 La palabra del Señor se dirigió
a mí diciendo: 2 –No tomes mujer,
ni tengas hijos ni hijas en este lugar,
3 porque esto dice el Señor acerca de los
hijos e hijas que nazcan en este lugar, y
acerca de las madres que les den a luz,
y acerca de los padres que los engendren
en esta tierra: 4 «Morirán irremisiblemente
de muerte dolorosa. No se les
hará duelo, ni serán enterrados, servirán
de estiércol en la superficie del campo;
perecerán a espada o de hambre; sus
cadáveres serán pasto de las aves del cielo
y de las bestias de la tierra».
5 »Además, esto dice el Señor: «No
entres en casa de banquete fúnebre, ni
vayas a hacer duelo, ni a condolerte,
porque le he retirado mi paz a este pueblo
–oráculo del Señor–, y también mi
piedad y misericordia. 6 Grandes y pequeños
morirán en esta tierra, y no serán
sepultados, ni se les hará duelo. Nadie
se hará incisiones ni se rapará por
ellos. 7 No partirán el pan con el que está
de luto para consolarle por el muerto, ni
se le escanciará la copa de la condolencia
por su padre o por su madre. 8 Tampoco
entrarás en casa de festín, para
sentarte con ellos a comer y beber, 9 porque
esto dice el Señor de los ejércitos,
Dios de Israel: “Mirad que voy a hacer
que cese en este lugar, a vuestros ojos y
en vuestros días, la voz de alegría y la
voz de gozo, la voz del novio y la voz de
la novia”».
10 »Cuando anuncies a este pueblo
todas estas cosas, te preguntarán:
«¿Por qué ha decretado el Señor toda
esta desgracia tan grande contra nosotros?
¿Cuál es la culpa y cuál el pecado
con que hemos ofendido al Señor, nuestro
Dios?». 11 Entonces les responderás:
«Porque vuestros padres me abandonaron
–oráculo del Señor–, y se fueron
tras otros dioses para darles culto y postrarse
ante ellos, mientras me abandonaban
y no guardaban mi Ley. 12 Pero
vosotros habéis obrado peor que vuestros
padres: cada uno seguís a vuestro
corazón obstinado, sin escucharme a
Mí. 13 Os lanzaré de esta tierra a una tierra
que ni vosotros ni vuestros padres
habéis conocido, y serviréis allí a otros
dioses, día y noche, pues no gozaréis de
mi favor.
14 »Por eso, mirad que vienen días –
oráculo del Señor–, en que no se dirá
más: “¡Vive el Señor, que hizo subir a
los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto!”,
15 sino: “¡Vive el Señor, que hizo subir a
los hijos de Israel de la tierra del norte y
de todas las tierras donde los había dispersado!”.
Y los haré volver a su tierra, a
la que di a sus padres.
16 »Mira: voy a enviar muchos pescadores
–oráculo del Señor– a pescarlos,
y después enviaré muchos cazadores a
cazarlos, por todo monte y por cualquier
colina, y en las cuevas de las rocas.
17 Porque mis ojos vigilan todos sus
caminos: éstos no se me ocultan, ni se
esconde su culpa ante mis ojos. 18 Ante
todo, les pagaré el doble por su culpa
y su pecado, porque han profanado
mi tierra con la carroña de sus ídolos, y
han colmado mi heredad con sus ídolos
abominables».
19¡Oh, Señor, mi fuerza y fortaleza,
mi refugio el día de la angustia!
A Ti vendrán las naciones
desde los extremos de la tierra a decir:
«Sólo mentira fue la herencia de
nuestros padres,
vanidad sin nada provechoso».
20«¿Es que puede el hombre fabricarse
dioses?
¡Esos no son dioses!
21Por tanto, mirad que les voy a mostrar,
les voy a enseñar esta vez,
mi poder y mi fuerza,
y sabrán que mi Nombre es el Señor».
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
En medio de una advertencia para prestar atención a la palabra de Dios, escuchamos "Y los haré volver a su tierra, a la que dí a sus padres.” (Jer 16:15) Dios siempre está buscando maneras para llearnos de regreso, llendo tan lejos como enviarnos a si Hijo Único y dejándonos luego al Espíritu Santo y el Sacremanto. Señor Jesús, ¿cómo puedo refugiarme hoy en tí y atender tu invitación a la cercanía?
