Genesis 7
Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 7:
We enter into the heart of the Great Flood with a sweeping narrative filled with repetitions. We see the number seven, symbolic for perfection or fulfillment. Forty, used for “a long period of time” in the ancient world, tracks time. While God contained waters in Creation (1:6-9), He now unleashes those waters so that torrential rain pours from above and geysers burst forth from below to de-create the earth. As the chaotic waters reach over the heights of the mountains, Noah, his family, and representatives of all the animals are shut into the ark, a type of treasure chest protecting God’s good creation.

The Great Flood
1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. 2 Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate; 3 and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and female, to keep their kind alive upon the face of all the earth. 4 For in seven days I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” 5 And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.
6 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. 7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him went into the ark, to escape the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground, 9 two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, 14 they and every beast according to its kind, and all the cattle according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 And they that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.
17 The flood continued forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark floated on the face of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed so mightily upon the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; 20 the waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. 21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, birds, cattle, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm upon the earth, and every man;
22 everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. 23 He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark. 24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.

"...Go into the ark, you and all your household, for you alone in this generation have I found to be righteous before me..." (v1) Imagine God saying this same thing to you as He did Noah...How do you feel about that? In what ways have you experienced our Lord's favor lived in and through you? Reflect on that with the Lord.

. 7 1 El Señor dijo a Noé:
–Entra en el arca, tú y toda tu
casa, porque he visto que eres el único
justo ante mí en esta generación. 2 De
todos los animales puros tomarás siete
parejas, macho y hembra; y de los animales
impuros, una pareja, macho y
hembra. 3 También de las aves del cielo,
siete parejas, macho y hembra, para que
sobreviva su descendencia sobre toda la
faz de la tierra. 4 Porque dentro de siete
días yo haré que llueva sobre la tierra
durante cuarenta días y cuarenta noches,
y exterminaré de la faz de la tierra
todos los seres que hice.
5 Noé hizo todo tal y como el Señor
le había ordenado. 6 Noé tenía seiscientos
años cuando cayó el diluvio sobre la
tierra. 7 Noé, por causa de las aguas del
diluvio, entró en el arca; y con él sus hijos,
su mujer y las mujeres de sus hijos.
8 De los animales puros y de los impuros,
de las aves y de todo lo que repta
sobre la tierra, 9 entraron con Noé en
el arca por parejas, macho y hembra,
como Dios había ordenado a Noé. 10 Al
cabo de una semana, las aguas del diluvio
cayeron sobre la tierra.
11 En el año seiscientos de la vida de
Noé, el segundo mes, el día diecisiete
del mes, ese día, irrumpieron todas
las fuentes del abismo, y se abrieron las
compuertas del cielo. 12 Estuvo lloviendo
sobre la tierra cuarenta días y cuarenta
noches.
13 En aquel mismo día entraron en el
arca Noé y sus hijos Sem, Cam y Jafet,
su mujer, y las tres mujeres de sus hijos;
14 ellos y los animales de cada especie:
toda clase de ganado, de reptiles que
se mueven por la tierra, y de aves –todos
los pájaros y seres alados–. 15 Entraron
con Noé en el arca parejas de todos los
seres vivos. 16 E iban llegando, macho y
hembra, de todos ellos, y entraron, tal y
como Dios se lo había ordenado a Noé.
Y el Señor cerró la puerta tras él.
17 Cuarenta días duró el diluvio sobre
la tierra. Las aguas fueron creciendo
y levantaron el arca, de manera que se
alzó por encima de la tierra. 18 Las aguas
arreciaron y aumentaron mucho sobre
la tierra, pero el arca flotaba sobre la superficie
de las aguas. 19 Más y más crecieron
las aguas sobre la tierra, de manera
que todas las montañas quedaron
cubiertas, incluso las más altas que hay
bajo el cielo. 20 Subieron las aguas quince
codos por encima y quedaron cubiertas
las montañas. 21 Pereció todo ser que se
mueve por la tierra: aves, ganados, fieras,
todos los seres que llenaban la tierra
y toda la humanidad. 22 Todo lo que
tenía algún modo de respiración, todo
cuanto existía en la tierra firme, murió.
23 Así el Señor exterminó todos los seres
que había sobre la faz de la tierra, desde
el hombre hasta el ganado, los reptiles
y las aves del cielo: todo fue exterminado
de la tierra; sólo quedaron Noé
y los que estaban con él en el arca. 24 Las
aguas inundaron la tierra durante ciento
cincuenta días
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"...Entra en el arca, tú y toda tu familia, porque sólo a ti, en esta generación, te he hallado justo ante Mí..." (v1) Imagina que Dios te dice esto mismo que le dijo a Noé... ¿Cómo te sentirías al respecto? ¿De qué manera has experimentado el amor de nuestro Señor en ti y a través de ti? Reflexiona sobre esto con el Señor.
