Genesis 18

Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 18:

The Lord’s sixth appearance to Abraham begins as three men arrive at an usual time: during the heat of the day. Abraham demonstrates great hospitality, and Sarai is surprised to learn that she will bear a son. The Lord, knowing that He has called Abraham’s family to share His righteousness and justice, speaks directly to Abraham about His plans for sinful cities. The Lord is going to verify if the prayers regarding the sin are true, and if so, He will bring punishment. In his famous prayer of intercession, Abraham begs the Lord to not punish the innocent with the sinful, and the Lord promises to have mercy if just ten innocent men can be found.

A Son Promised to Abraham and Sarah

1 And the Lord appeared to him by the Oaks a of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the earth, 3 and said, “My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, 5 while I fetch a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” 6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of ﬁne meal, knead it, and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. 8 Then he took curds, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you in the spring, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, in the spring, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by him? 19 No, for I have chosen e him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” 20 Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry which has come to me; and if not, I will know.”
22 So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 Then Abraham drew near, and said, “Will you indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are ﬁfty righteous within the city; will you then destroy the place and not spare it for the ﬁfty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” 26 And the Lord said, “If I ﬁnd at Sodom ﬁfty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” 27 Abraham answered, “Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose ﬁve of the ﬁfty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of ﬁve?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I ﬁnd forty- ﬁve there.” 29 Again he spoke to him, and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I ﬁnd thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” 33 And the Lord went his way, when he had ﬁnished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Génesis 18

El Señor se manifestó a Abrahán junto
a la encina de Mambré, cuando estaba
sentado a la puerta de la tienda en lo
más caluroso del día. 2 Abrahán alzó la vista
y vio que tres hombres estaban de pie junto
a él. Apenas los vio, corrió a su encuentro
desde la puerta de la tienda y se postró en
tierra 3 diciendo: –Mi Señor, si he hallado gracia a tus
ojos, no pases sin detenerte junto a tu
siervo. 4 Haré que traigan un poco de
agua para que os lavéis los pies, y descansaréis
bajo el árbol; 5 entretanto, traeré
un trozo de pan para que reparéis
vuestras fuerzas, y luego seguiréis adelante,
pues por algo habéis pasado junto
a vuestro siervo.
Contestaron:
–Sí, haz como has dicho.
6 Abrahán corrió a la tienda donde
estaba Sara y le dijo:
–Date prisa, amasa tres seim de flor
de harina y haz unas tortas.
7 Él fue corriendo a la vacada, tomó
un hermoso ternero recental y lo entregó
a su siervo que se dio prisa en prepararlo.
8 Luego tomó cuajada, leche, y
el ternero que había preparado, y lo sirvió
ante ellos; y permaneció en pie a su
lado, bajo el árbol, mientras ellos comían.
9 Después le preguntaron:
–¿Dónde está Sara, tu mujer?
Él contestó:
–Ahí en la tienda.
10 Y uno le dijo:
–Sin falta volveré a ti la próxima primavera,
y Sara tu mujer habrá tenido un
hijo.
Sara lo oyó desde la entrada de la
tienda, pues estaba detrás del que hablaba.
11 Abrahán y Sara eran ancianos,
de edad avanzada, y a Sara le había cesado
la regla de las mujeres. 12 Sara se sonrió
por dentro, diciendo: «¿Después de
estar consumida, y con mi marido anciano,
voy a sentir placer?»
13 El Señor dijo a Abrahán:
–¿Por qué se ha reído Sara, diciendo:
«¿De veras voy a dar a luz siendo anciana?
». 14 ¿Es que hay algo difícil para el
Señor? En el tiempo señalado, la próxima
primavera, volveré a ti y Sara habrá
tenido un hijo.
15 Sara lo negó diciendo:
–No me he reído –pues tenía miedo.
Pero Él le contestó:
–No es cierto, te has reído.
16 Los hombres se levantaron de allí
y se dirigieron hacia Sodoma. Abrahán
iba con ellos para despedirlos. 17 Entonces
el Señor se dijo: «¿Cómo podré
ocultar a Abrahán lo que voy a hacer,
18 cuando Abrahán se va a convertir en
un pueblo grande y poderoso, y en él
van a ser bendecidos todos los pueblos
de la tierra?; 19 pues a él lo he elegido
para que instruya a sus hijos y a su futura
casa, y para que guarden el camino
del Señor practicando la justicia y el derecho,
de forma que el Señor conceda a
Abrahán lo que le ha prometido».
20 Y dijo el Señor:
–Se ha extendido un gran clamor
contra Sodoma y Gomorra, y su pecado
es gravísimo; 21 bajaré y veré si han obrado
en todo según ese clamor que contra
ella ha llegado hasta mí, y si no es
así lo sabré.
22 Los hombres partieron de allí y se
dirigieron a Sodoma, mientras Abrahán
permanecía todavía junto al Señor.
23 Abrahán se acercó a Dios y le dijo:
–¿Vas a destruir al justo con el malvado?
24 Quizá haya cincuenta justos
dentro de la ciudad; ¿la vas a destruir?,
¿no la perdonarás en atención a los cincuenta
justos que haya dentro de ella?
25 Lejos de ti hacer tal cosa; matar al justo
con el malvado, y equiparar al justo y
al malvado; lejos de ti. ¿Es que el juez de
toda la tierra no va a hacer justicia?
26 El Señor respondió:
–Si encuentro en Sodoma cincuenta
justos dentro de la ciudad, la perdonaré
en atención a ellos.
27 Abrahán contestó diciendo:
–Soy en verdad un atrevido al hablar
a mi Señor, yo que soy polvo y ceniza;
28 quizá falten cinco para los cincuenta justos. ¿Acaso destruirás por cinco
toda la ciudad?
Dios respondió:
–No la destruiré si encuentro allí
cuarenta y cinco.
29 Todavía volvió a hablarle Abrahán
diciendo:
–Quizá se encuentren allí cuarenta.
Dijo Dios:
–No lo haré en atención a los cuarenta.
30 Continuó Abrahán:
–No se enfade mi Señor si sigo hablando;
quizá se encuentren allí treinta.
Dijo Dios:
–No lo haré si encuentro allí treinta.
31 Insistió Abrahán:
–Soy en verdad un atrevido al hablar
a mi Señor; quizá se encuentren
sólo veinte.
Contestó Dios:
–No la destruiré en atención a los
veinte.
32 Abrahán siguió:
–No se enfade mi Señor si hablo una
vez más; quizá se encuentren allí diez.
Dios contestó:
–No la destruiré en atención a los
diez.
33 Cuando terminó de hablar con
Abrahán, el Señor se marchó, y Abrahán
volvió a su lugar.

Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy

Señor, así como Abraham suplica por la salvación de la gente en la ciudad de Sodoma y Gomorra, ayúdame a suplicar por aquellos que te necesitan y necesitan tu salvación. Te pido por esas personas en este momento.
