Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 15:
We come to a key moment in salvation history as God appears to Abram a fourth time. Abram is honest enough to voice his confusion about promises for his descendants, for he remains childless. In response, the Lord enters into a covenant with Abram. He directs Abram to follow a ritual of the ancient world that was used to seal an agreement: animals are cut in two, and their parts are laid in two parallel lines. The people involved walk between the animals, symbolizing that if someone breaks the agreement, that person can be broken like the animals (see Jer 34:18-20). In this case, the Lord, in the form of fire, condescends to move between the animals, revealing to Abram how serious He is about keeping His promise of descendants.

God’s Covenant with Abram
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 And he believed the Lord; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.” 8 But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
10 And he brought him all these, cut them in two, and laid each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.
11 And when birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and behold, a dread and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know of a surety that your descendants will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and will be slaves there, and they will be oppressed for four hundred years; 14 but I will bring judgment on the nation which they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for yourself, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

God makes His covenant with Abraham, from the promises He made in Gen 12. What seems improbable or impossible to Abram is faithfully promised by God, although Abram may not live to see it fully come to pass. Ask for the steadfast faith to wait on the promises of the Lord in your life. Jesus, we trust in you.

Después de estos sucesos, la palabra
del Señor llegó a Abrán en una visión,
diciéndole:
–No temas, Abrán, yo soy un escudo
para ti; tu recompensa será muy grande.
2 Abrán contestó:
–¡Mi Señor Dios! ¿Qué me vas a dar,
si estoy sin hijos, y el heredero de mi
casa va a ser Eliézer de Damasco?
3 Y añadió Abrán:
–He aquí que no me has dado descendencia
y, por tanto, un criado de mi
casa me va a heredar.
4 Pero la palabra del Señor le respondió:
–No te heredará ése; sino que te heredará
uno que saldrá de tus entrañas.
5 Entonces le llevó afuera y le dijo:
–Mira al cielo y cuenta, si puedes,
las estrellas.
Y añadió:
–Así será tu descendencia.
6 Abrán creyó en el Señor, quien se lo
contó como justicia.
7 Después le dijo:
–Yo soy el Señor que te saqué de Ur
de los Caldeos para darte esta tierra en
posesión.
8 Abrán contestó:
–¡Mi Señor Dios! ¿Cómo conoceré
que voy a poseerla?
9 Le respondió:
–Tráeme una ternera de tres años,
una cabra de tres años, un carnero de
tres años, una tórtola y un pichón.
10 Abrán los trajo, los partió por medio
y puso cada mitad enfrente de la otra; pero
no partió las aves. 11 Los buitres bajaban
a los cadáveres y Abrán los ahuyentaba.
12 Cuando estaba poniéndose el sol,
un profundo sueño cayó sobre Abrán, y
le invadió un terror enorme y tenebroso.
13 Le dijo a Abrán:
–Has de saber que tus descendientes
serán extranjeros en tierra ajena, donde
los someterán a esclavitud y los afligirán
durante cuatrocientos años; 14 pero
yo también juzgaré a la nación a la que
habrán de servir, y después saldrán con
grandes riquezas. 15 Tú te reunirás con
tus padres en paz, serás sepultado muy
anciano. 16 Ellos volverán aquí a la cuarta
generación, porque hasta entonces no
se habrá colmado la culpa de los amorreos.
17 Se puso el sol y sobrevino la oscuridad;
y apareció una hoguera humeante,
y una llama de fuego que pasó entre
aquellas mitades.
18 Aquel día el Señor estableció una
alianza con Abrán, diciéndole:
–A tu descendencia daré esta tierra,
desde el río de Egipto, hasta el gran río,
el río Éufrates: 19 la tierra de los quenitas,
quenizitas, cadmonitas, 20 hititas, perezeos,
refaítas, 21 amorreos, cananeos,
guirgaseos y jebuseos
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Dios lleva a cabo su alianza con Abraham, desde las promesas que hizo en Gen 12. Lo que parece poco probable o imposible para Abram es prometido fielmente por Dios, aunque Abram quizás no viva para verlo por completo. Pide la fe firme para esperar en las promesas del Señor en tu vida. Jesús, confiamos en tí.
