Commentary on the Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians, Chapter 4:
Paul continues to explain the true gospel message by unpacking the full meaning of being an “heir” of God’s promise (3:29). In the ancient word, a minor (child) heir to a family’s inheritance would be under the direction of a legal “guardian” (trustee/custodian), with no more agency or rights than a slave (vs. 1-2). The wondrous gospel message is that God sends his Son to redeem us from this state, to free us from being under a guardianship/custodian, the Law (3:24). As truly adopted “sons” of God, we receive the full inheritance, the Spirit who unites us intimately with God (vs. 6-7). In verses 8-31, Paul presents the Galatians with a choice. They can accept this consequence of baptism, living in the freedom of Christ as an heir of God the Father, as “children of the promise” (3:27, 4:28). Or, they can reject this offer and relate to God as a slave to a master, a relationship of bondage and obligation, rather than love freely shared.

1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; 2 but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir.
Paul Reproves the Galatians
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods; 9 but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years! 11 I am afraid I have labored over you in vain.
12 Brethren, I beg you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong; 13 you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first; 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much of, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! 20 I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

21 Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,
“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;
break forth and shout, you who are not with labor pains;
for the desolate has more children
than she who has a husband.”
28Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

4 1 Ahora bien, mientras el heredero
es menor de edad, aunque sea dueño
de todo, no se diferencia en nada de
un siervo, 2 sino que está sometido a tutores
y administradores hasta el momento
señalado por su padre. 3 También
nosotros cuando éramos menores
de edad estábamos sujetos como esclavos
a los elementos del mundo. 4 Pero al
llegar la plenitud de los tiempos, envió
Dios a su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido
bajo la Ley, 5 para redimir a los que estaban
bajo la Ley, a fin de que recibiésemos
la adopción de hijos. 6 Y, puesto que
sois hijos, Dios envió a nuestros corazones
el Espíritu de su Hijo, que clama:
«¡Abbá, Padre!» 7 De manera que ya no
eres siervo, sino hijo; y como eres hijo,
también heredero por gracia de Dios.
8 Pero en otro tiempo, cuando no conocíais
a Dios, servisteis a los que realmente
no son dioses.
9 Ahora, en cambio, que habéis conocido
a Dios, mejor dicho, que habéis sido
conocidos por Dios, ¿cómo es que volvéis
otra vez a esos elementos sin fuerza
y sin valor, a los que queréis servir de
nuevo como antes? 10 ¡Seguís observando
cuidadosamente los días, los meses,
las estaciones y los años! 11 Temo haberme
esforzado por vosotros inútilmente.
12 Os ruego, hermanos, que seáis
como yo, pues también yo me he hecho
como vosotros. En nada me habéis
agraviado; 13 bien sabéis que cuando
os prediqué el Evangelio la primera
vez, por culpa de una enfermedad, 14 a
pesar de que esa situación era una prueba
para vosotros, no me despreciasteis
ni me rechazasteis, sino que me recibisteis
como a un ángel de Dios, como al
mismo Cristo Jesús.
15 ¿Entonces, dónde está aquella alegría
que manifestabais? Puedo atestiguar
de vosotros que, de ser posible, os
habríais arrancado los ojos para dármelos.
16 ¿Es que me he convertido en
vuestro enemigo por deciros la verdad?
17 El interés que muestran por vosotros
no es bueno, sino que quieren separaros
de nosotros, para que os entreguéis
a ellos. 18 En cambio lo que es bueno es
mostrar siempre interés por el bien, y
no sólo cuando estoy presente entre vosotros,
19 hijos míos, por quienes padezco
otra vez dolores de parto, hasta que
Cristo esté formado en vosotros. 20 Desearía
estar presente ahora entre vosotros,
y cambiar el tono de mi voz, porque
no sé qué hacer con vosotros.
21 Decidme, los que queréis estar sujetos
a la Ley: ¿no habéis oído la Ley?
22 Pues está escrito que Abrahán tuvo
dos hijos, uno de la esclava y otro de la
libre. 23 Pero el de la esclava nació según
la carne; en cambio, el de la libre, en virtud
de la promesa. 24 Todo esto tiene un
sentido alegórico, porque estas mujeres
representan los dos testamentos: uno, el
del Monte Sinaí, que engendra esclavos,
es Agar. 25 La palabra «Agar» en Arabia
designa el monte Sinaí y corresponde a
la Jerusalén actual, que es, en efecto, esclava
junto con sus hijos. 26 En cambio,
la Jerusalén de arriba es libre, y es nuestra
madre; 27 pues está escrito:
Alégrate, estéril, que no das a luz;
rompe en gritos de júbilo, tú que no
sufres
dolores de parto,
porque son muchos los hijos de la
abandonada,
más que los de la que tiene marido.
28 Vosotros, hermanos, como Isaac,
sois hijos de la promesa. 29 Pero al igual
que entonces el que había nacido según
la carne perseguía al nacido según el espíritu,
así sucede también ahora. 30 Pero
¿qué dice la Escritura? Expulsa a la esclava
y a su hijo, pues no heredará el hijo
de la esclava con el hijo de la libre. 31 Por
tanto, hermanos, no somos hijos de la
esclava, sino de la libre.
