Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 34:
Before the people can journey from Mt. Sinai to the Promised Land, the Covenant must be renewed after having been so egregiously violated by the worship of the golden calf. God again writes His commands on stone, and reveals who He is: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, faithful, and forgiving, yet not allowing the guilty to go free. This description of God’s character will infuse later writings of Jewish Scripture and be referenced some forty times in the Old Testament. God warns His people that they must not build relationships with, nor follow the worship practices of, the pagan inhabitants of the Promised Land. He restates and expands some of His commands about the proper worship He is due, and what practices to avoid. For forty days Moses is in God’s glory cloud, and when He returns to the encampment at the base of the mountain, his face shines from being in God’s presence. New Tables of Stone
34 The LORD said to Moses, “Cut two tables of stone like the first; and I will write upon the tables the words that were on the first tables, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. 3 No man shall come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let no flocks or herds feed before that mountain.” 4 So Moses cut two tables of stone like the first; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tables of stone. 5 And the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 The LORD passed before him, and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy and faithfulness, 7 keeping merciful love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses made haste to bow his head toward the earth, and worshiped. 9 And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let the Lord, I beg you, go in the midst of us, although it is a stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”
The Covenant Renewed
10 And he said, “Behold, I make a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been wrought in all the earth or in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD; for it is a terrible thing that I will do with you.
11 “Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 You shall tear down their altars, and break their pillars, and cut down their Asherim 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they play the harlot after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and one invites you, you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters play the harlot after their gods and make your sons play the harlot after their gods.
17 “You shall make for yourself no molten gods.
18 “The feast of unleavened bread you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt. 19 All that opens the womb is mine, all your male cattle, the firstlings of cow and sheep. 20 The firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the first-born of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.
21 “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. 22 And you shall observe the feast of weeks, the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end. 23 Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out nations before you, and enlarge your borders; neither shall any man desire your land, when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times in the year.
25 “You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left until the morning. 26 The first of the first fruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the LORD your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.”
27 And the LORD said to Moses, “Write these words; in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
The Shining Face of Moses
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tables of the covenant in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 And when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 And afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; 34 but whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the sons of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the sons of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone; and Moses would put the veil upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Dijo el Señor a Moisés:
–Hazte tallar dos tablas de piedra
como las primeras y escribiré sobre ellas las
mismas palabras que había en las primeras
que tú rompiste.
2 Prepárate para mañana y sube temprano
al monte Sinaí; permanece allí en
la cima de la montaña. 3 Nadie subirá contigo
ni aparecerá nadie en toda la montaña;
ni siquiera el ganado menor o mayor
pastará en la ladera de la montaña.
4 Así pues, Moisés talló dos tablas de
piedra como las primeras, madrugó y
subió temprano al monte Sinaí, como le
había ordenado el Señor, llevando en su
mano las dos tablas de piedra.
5 Descendió el Señor en la nube y se
colocó junto a él e invocó el nombre del
Señor.
6 El Señor pasó delante de él proclamando:
–Señor, Señor, Dios compasivo y
misericordioso, lento a la cólera y rico
en misericordia y fidelidad; 7 que mantiene
su misericordia por mil generaciones,
que perdona la culpa, el delito y
el pecado, pero nada deja impune pues
castiga la culpa de los padres en los hijos
y en los hijos de los hijos hasta la tercera
y cuarta generación.
8 Moisés, al instante, se postró en tierra
y le adoró, 9 diciendo:
–Señor mío, si he hallado gracia a
tus ojos, camina, Señor, en medio de
nosotros; cierto que éste es un pueblo
de dura cerviz, pero tú, perdona nuestra
culpa y nuestro pecado y recíbenos
como heredad tuya.
10 El Señor le respondió:
–He aquí que establezco una alianza:
ante tu pueblo entero realizaré maravillas
como nunca se han hecho en
ningún país ni nación, de suerte que el
pueblo que te rodea vea la obra de Dios,
pues yo voy a realizar por medio de ti
cosas que causen terror.
11 »Guarda bien lo que hoy te ordeno;
he aquí que yo expulsaré de tu presencia
al amorreo, al cananeo, al hitita,
al perezeo, al jeveo y al jebuseo. 12 Cuida
de no establecer pacto con los habitantes
del país en el que vas a entrar, para que
no sean como una trampa para ti. 13 Antes
bien, destruiréis sus altares, derribaréis
sus estelas y destrozaréis sus aserás.
14 »No te postrarás ante otros dioses,
porque el Señor se llama «Dios celoso»;
es un Dios celoso.
15 »No establecerás alianza con los
habitantes de ese país, no sea que cuando
se prostituyan con sus dioses y les
ofrezcan sacrificios, te inviten, y tú comas
de su sacrificio. 16 No tomarás a sus
hijas como esposas de tus hijos, no sea
que cuando ellas se prostituyan con sus
dioses, arrastren también a tus hijos a
prostituirse con ellos.
17 »No te harás dioses de metal fundido.
18 »Guardarás la fiesta de los Ácimos:
durante siete días, como te he ordenado,
comerás panes ácimos en el tiempo establecido
del mes de Abib, porque en el
mes de Abib saliste de Egipto.
19 »Todo primer nacido es mío; y todo
primer nacido macho de tu ganado, tanto
del ganado mayor como del menor, es
mío; 20 pero el primer nacido del asno lo
rescatarás con un cordero; si no lo rescatas,
lo desnucarás. Al primogénito de tus
hijos lo rescatarás; no te presentarás ante
mí con las manos vacías.
Seis días trabajarás, pero el día
séptimo descansarás; descansarás incluso
en tiempo de siembra o de siega.
22 »Celebrarás la fiesta de las Semanas,
la de las primicias de la siega del trigo;
y la fiesta de la Recolección al final
del año.
23 »Tres veces al año comparecerá
todo varón ante el Señor, Dios de Israel.
24 Pues cuando yo expulse a las naciones
delante de ti y ensanche tus fronteras,
nadie codiciará tus tierras mientras subes
a presentarte ante el Señor, tu Dios,
tres veces al año.
25 »No inmolarás con pan fermentado
la sangre de mi sacrificio. No guardarás
hasta el día siguiente la víctima de
la fiesta de Pascua.
26 »Llevarás a la casa del Señor, tu
Dios, lo mejor de las primicias de tu tierra.
»No cocerás el cabrito en la leche de
su madre.
27 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
–Escribe estas palabras, porque a tenor
de ellas establezco alianza contigo y
con Israel.
28 Moisés estuvo allí con el Señor
cuarenta días y cuarenta noches; no comió
pan ni bebió agua, y escribió sobre
las tablas las palabras de la alianza, los
diez mandamientos.
29 Cuando Moisés bajó del monte, llevaba
en su mano las tablas del Testimonio,
pero no sabía que su rostro se había
vuelto radiante por haber hablado con el
Señor. 30 Aarón y todos los hijos de Israel
miraron a Moisés y al ver que su rostro
se había vuelto radiante, temieron acercarse
a él. 31 Entonces Moisés los llamó y
Aarón y todos los jefes de la comunidad
se volvieron hacia él y pudo hablarles.
32 Después se acercaron todos los hijos
de Israel y él les ordenó todo lo que
el Señor le había dicho en el monte Sinaí.
33 Al terminar de hablar con ellos,
Moisés se cubrió el rostro con un velo.
34 Cuando Moisés entraba a la presencia
del Señor para hablar con Él se quitaba
el velo hasta que salía; y al salir, transmitía
a los hijos de Israel lo que el Señor
le había ordenado. 35 Los hijos de
Israel veían que el rostro de Moisés se
había vuelto radiante; él volvía a cubrirse
el rostro con el velo hasta que entraba
para hablar con el Señor.
