Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 30:
The Jewish priests will need some additional furnishings and support to carry out their ritual responsibilities. God provides the instructions for the altar where incense will be burned and for the basin that the priests will use for ritual washing. A census will be taken, and adult males will pay a fee as an offering to support worship at the Tabernacle. God’s instructions for making the anointing oil and incense reveal their ritual value, for they are to be made with fine spices and perfumes and their recipes may not be copied for any secular purpose.
The Book of Exodus, Chapter 30
The Altar of Incense
1 “You shall make an altar to burn incense upon; of acacia wood shall you make it. 2 A cubit shall be its length, and a cubit its breadth; it shall be square, and two cubits shall be its height; its horns shall be of one piece with it. 3 And you shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and its sides round about and its horns; and you shall make for it a molding of gold round about. 4 And two golden rings shall you make for it; under its molding on two opposite sides of it shall you make them, and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it. 5 You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. 6 And you shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the covenant, before the mercy seat that is over the covenant, where I will meet with you. 7 And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, 8 and when Aaron sets up the lamps in the evening, he shall burn it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. 9 You shall offer no unholy incense thereon, nor burnt offering, nor cereal offering; and you shall pour no libation thereon. 10 Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once a year; with the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations; it is most holy to the LORD.”
The Half Shekel for the Sanctuary
11 The LORD said to Moses, 12 “When you take the census of the sons of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for himself to the LORD when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them. 13 Each who is numbered in the census shall give this: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel as an offering to the LORD. 14 Every one who is numbered in the census, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the LORD’S offering. 15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when you give the LORD’S offering to make atonement for yourselves. 16 And you shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel, and shall appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting; that it may bring the sons of Israel to remembrance before the LORD, so as to make atonement for yourselves.”
The Bronze Laver
17 The LORD said to Moses, 18 “You shall also make a laver of bronze, with its base of bronze, for washing. And you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it, 19 with which Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet. 20 When they go into the tent of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering by fire to the LORD, they shall wash with water, lest they die. 21 They shall wash their hands and their feet, lest they die: it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his descendants throughout their generations.”
The Anointing Oil and Incense
22 Moreover, the LORD said to Moses, 23 “Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, two hundred and fifty, and of aromatic cane two hundred and fifty, 24 and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin; 25 and you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; a holy anointing oil it shall be. 26 And you shall anoint with it the tent of meeting and the ark of the covenant, 27 and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, 28 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils and the laver and its base; 29 you shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them will become holy. 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. 31 And you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured upon the bodies of ordinary men, and you shall make no other like it in composition; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’ ”
34 And the LORD said to Moses, “Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part), 35 and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy; 36 and you shall beat some of it very small, and put part of it before the covenant in the tent of meeting where I shall meet with you; it shall be for you most holy. 37 And the incense which you shall make according to its composition, you shall not make for yourselves; it shall be for you holy to the LORD. 38 Whoever makes any like it to use as perfume shall be cut off from his people.”

Today we read about the instructions given to Moses regarding incense. God is very specific that these instructions are only to apply to incense offered to Him. Some things are meant for the Lord only. Lord, what areas of my life have I set aside just for you?

Construirás un altar donde quemar
incienso; lo harás de madera de acacia,
2 de un codo de largo y un codo de ancho;
será cuadrado y tendrá dos codos de
alto; sus cuernos formarán un solo cuerpo
con él. 3 Lo recubrirás de oro puro, tanto
la parte superior como sus costados y
sus cuernos; le harás alrededor una moldura
de oro. 4 Debajo de la moldura, a ambos
lados, pondrás dos anillas de oro y las colocarás
en los dos lados para introducir por
ellas los varales y poder así transportar el
altar. 5 Harás los varales de madera de acacia
y los recubrirás de oro.
6 »Instalarás el altar delante del velo
que oculta el arca del Testimonio, frente
al Propiciatorio que cubre el Testimonio
donde yo me encontraré contigo.
7 Aarón quemará sobre él incienso
aromático; cada mañana lo quemará
al preparar las lámparas, 8 y también
al atardecer cuando las reavive; será el
incienso perpetuo ante el Señor de generación
en generación. 9 No ofreceréis
sobre él incienso profano, ni holocaustos
ni ofrendas, ni derramaréis sobre él
libación alguna. 10 Aarón hará la expiación
sobre los cuernos del altar una vez
al año. Con la sangre del sacrificio expiatorio
por el pecado, hará expiación
sobre él una vez al año de generación
en generación.
»Este altar es cosa santísima para el
Señor».
11 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
12 –Cuando para hacer el censo hagas
recuento de los hijos de Israel, cada
uno, al ser inscrito, pagará al Señor el
rescate de su propia persona para que
no les sobrevenga ninguna plaga al ser
inscrito. 13 Cada uno de los inscritos pagará
medio siclo, según el siclo del santuario;
cada siclo equivale a veinte guerah.
Este medio siclo es lo reservado al
Señor. 14 Todos los inscritos, de veinte
años para arriba, pagarán lo reservado
al Señor. 15 Al entregar el tributo reservado
al Señor como tributo de su persona,
ni el rico pagará más del medio siclo,
ni el pobre menos. 16 Percibirás de los hijos
de Israel el dinero de los tributos y lo
destinarás al servicio de la Tienda de la
Reunión. Así será para los hijos de Israel
memorial ante el Señor por el rescate
de sí mismos.
17 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
18 –Fundirás una pila de bronce, con
su basa también de bronce, para las
abluciones. La colocarás entre la Tienda
de la Reunión y el altar; y pondrás agua
en ella 19 para que Aarón y sus hijos se laven
las manos y los pies. 20 Antes de entrar
en la Tienda de la Reunión se lavarán
con esta agua para que no mueran;
y lo mismo cuando se acerquen al altar
para el servicio de quemar las ofrendas
consumidas en honor del Señor. 21 Se lavarán,
pues, las manos y los pies para
que no mueran.
»Es ley perpetua para ellos, para Aarón
y sus generaciones, de generación
en generación.
22 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
23 –Provéete de perfumes de primera
calidad: de mirra pura, quinientos
siclos; de cinamomo, la mitad: doscientos
cincuenta siclos; de caña aromática,
otros doscientos cincuenta; 24 de casia,
quinientos, según el siclo del santuario;
y un hin de aceite de oliva. 25 Con
todo ello elaborarás el óleo de la unción
sagrada; perfume preparado con
arte de perfumistas es el óleo de la unción
sagrada del Señor. 26 Con él ungirás
la Tienda de la Reunión y el arca
del Testimonio, 27 la mesa con todos sus
utensilios y el candelabro con sus utensilios,
el altar del incienso 28 y el altar de
los holocaustos con todos sus utensilios,
la pila y su basa. 29 Así los consagrarás
y serán cosa santísima. Todo el
que se acerque a ellos quedará consagrado.
30 »Ungirás también a Aarón y a sus
hijos y los consagrarás para que sean sacerdotes
en mi honor. 31 Y dirás a los hijos
de Israel: éste será el óleo de la unción
santa de generación en generación.
32 No se derramará sobre ningún otro
hombre ni haréis otro ungüento con
una composición parecida. Es cosa sagrada
y como sagrado lo habéis de tener.
33 Cualquiera que elabore algo similar
o lo derrame sobre un profano, será
extirpado de su pueblo.
34 Dijo el Señor a Moisés:
–Provéete de los siguientes aromas:
estacte, uña olorosa, gálbano, especies
aromáticas e incienso puro; todo ello
a partes iguales. 35 Prepararás con ello
un incienso aromático, elaborado con
arte de perfumista, sazonado con sal;
será puro y santo. 36 Una parte, que habrás
triturado en polvo finísimo, la colocarás
ante el Testimonio en la Tienda
de la Reunión donde yo me reuniré
contigo. Será para vosotros cosa santísima.
37 El incienso hecho según esta composición
no será para uso privado. Será
para ti cosa santa, consagrada al Señor.
38 Cualquiera que prepare algo semejante
para aspirar su perfume, será extirpado
de su pueblo.
