Commentary on The First Book of Samuel, Chapter 5:
Having captured the Ark of the Covenant in battle, the Philistines return home. They process the Ark through their key cities, and disaster follows the Ark wherever it goes! God’s power is demonstrated as statues to the powerful pagan god Dagon fall, people are diseased, and panic settles into the Philistines’ hearts and minds. The Philistines recognize God’s power and request the Ark be sent away so that the disasters will cease.
The First Book of Samuel, Chapter 5:
The Philistines and the Ark
1 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they carried it from Ebenezer to Ash-dod; 2 then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 The hand of the LORD was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us; for his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, the hand of the LORD was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that tumors broke out upon them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to slay us and our people.” 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not slay us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. The hand of God was very heavy there; 12 the men who did not die were stricken with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

What striking consequences among the Philistines who have now captured the Ark of God! Notably their pagan god, Dagon, falls down before the Ark, even its head and hands break off. What does this tell us about the futility of our own idols or false gods in our life? What am I making a priority ahead of God in my life?

Dios y la trasladaron desde Eben-
Ha-Ézer hasta Asdod. 2 Tomaron los filisteos
el arca de Dios, la introdujeron en
el templo de Dagón y la colocaron junto
a Dagón. 3 Al día siguiente se levantaron
los asdodeos y encontraron a Dagón
–caído boca abajo en tierra ante el
arca del Señor. Levantaron a Dagón y
lo volvieron a colocar en su sitio. 4 A la
mañana siguiente otra vez encontraron
a Dagón caído en tierra ante el Señor;
su cabeza y sus manos estaban cortadas
en el umbral; sólo le quedaba el tronco.
5 Por eso los sacerdotes de Dagón y todos
los que entran en su templo, en Asdod,
no pisan el umbral hasta el día de hoy.
6 La mano del Señor se hizo notar
entre los asdodeos aterrorizándolos
pues los hirió con tumores en Asdod
y sus alrededores. 7 Al ver todo eso los
hombres de Asdod dijeron:
–No debe permanecer con nosotros
el arca del Dios de Israel porque su
mano se ha endurecido contra nosotros
y contra Dagón, nuestro dios.
8 Después hicieron convocar en Asdod
a todos los príncipes de los filisteos
y dijeron:
–¿Qué debemos hacer con el arca
del Dios de Israel?
Respondieron:
–Que se traslade a Gat.
Y trasladaron allí el arca del Dios de
Israel. 9 Pero en cuanto la trasladaron,
cayó la mano del Señor sobre la ciudad
causando un gran terror; hirió a todos
los hombres de la ciudad, pequeños y
grandes, y les brotaron tumores. 10 Entonces
trasladaron el arca a Ecrón; pero
en cuanto el arca de Dios llegó a Ecrón,
exclamaron los ecronitas:
–Nos han traído el arca del Dios de
Israel para hacernos morir a nosotros y
a nuestro pueblo.
11 Así que hicieron convocar a todos
los príncipes de los filisteos y les dijeron:
–Devolved el arca del Dios de Israel;
que vuelva a su sitio y no nos haga morir
a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo.
12 Pues había un pánico mortal por
toda la ciudad porque la mano de Dios
había descargado muy duramente allí.
Los que no habían muerto estaban infectados
de tumores, y el clamor de la
ciudad llegaba hasta el cielo.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
¡Qué consecuencias tan sorprendentes entre los filisteos que ahora han capturado el Arca de Dios! En particular, su dios pagano, Dagón, cae ante el Arca, e incluso se le rompen la cabeza y las manos. ¿Qué nos dice esto sobre la inutilidad de nuestros ídolos o falsos dioses en nuestra vida? ¿Qué es lo que estoy priorizando por encima de Dios en mi vida?
