Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 15:
After providing his response to the questions and reports of the practices of the community of believers in Corinth, Paul now turns to his conclusion, emphasizing that what is of “first importance” is the gospel that they have already received (vs. 1-3). What is this gospel or “good news”? “That Christ died for our sins” and was victorious in the resurrection! (vs. 3-12). Jesus rescues each of us from captivity and through the grace of God we can respond yes to new life in Him (vs. 10-11). Jesus has defeated and destroyed death (vs. 20-28, 51-56). While Evil still exists in our world, Evil’s days are numbered! Jesus’ resurrection is the proof and pledge of the victory. In spite of all of the challenges of division, disunity, and debate in Corinth over difficult practical questions of how to live as a Christian, the closing teaching from Paul is to not forget what is first and foremost--Jesus gives us the victory, our “labor is not in vain” (vs. 57-58).

The Resurrection of Christ
1 Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, 2 by which you are saved, if you hold it fast—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God which is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
The Resurrection of the Dead
12 Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14 If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied.
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 “For God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All things are put in subjection under him,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things under him, that God may be everything to every one.
29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? 30 Why am I in peril every hour? 31 I protest, brethren, by my pride in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 34 Come to your right mind, and sin no more. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.
The Resurrection of the Body
35 But some one will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish man! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body which is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is alike, but there is one kind for men, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are celestial bodies and there are terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living soul”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual which is first but the physical, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. 50 I tell you this, brethren: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

que os prediqué, que recibisteis,
en el que os mantenéis firmes, 2 y
por el cual sois salvados, si lo guardáis
tal como os lo anuncié.
¡Y si no, habéis creído en vano!
3 Porque os transmití en primer lugar
lo mismo que yo recibí: que Cristo
murió por nuestros pecados, según
las Escrituras; 4 que fue sepultado y que
resucitó al tercer día, según las Escrituras;
5 y que se apareció a Cefas, y después
a los doce. 6 Después se apareció a
más de quinientos hermanos a la vez,
la mayoría de los cuales vive todavía y
algunos ya han muerto. 7 Luego se apareció
a Santiago, y después a todos los
apóstoles. 8 Y en último lugar, como a
un abortivo, se me apareció también a
mí. 9 Porque soy el menor de los apóstoles,
que no soy digno de ser llamado
apóstol, ya que perseguí a la Iglesia de
Dios. 10 Pero por la gracia de Dios soy
lo que soy, y la gracia que se me dio no
resultó inútil; al contrario, he trabajado
más que todos ellos; pero no yo, sino la
gracia de Dios que está conmigo. 11 Por
consiguiente, tanto ellos como yo esto
es lo que predicamos y esto lo que habéis
creído.
12 Pero si se predica que Cristo ha resucitado
de entre los muertos, ¿cómo
es que algunos de entre vosotros dicen que
no hay resurrección de los muertos?
13 Si no hay resurrección de los
muertos, tampoco Cristo ha resucitado.
14 Y si Cristo no ha resucitado, inútil es
nuestra predicación, inútil es también
vuestra fe. 15 Resultamos ser además falsos
testigos de Dios, porque, en contra
de Dios, testimoniamos que resucitó a
Cristo, a quien no resucitó, si de verdad
los muertos no resucitan. 16 Pues si los
muertos no resucitan, tampoco Cristo
ha resucitado; 17 pero si Cristo no ha
resucitado, vana es vuestra fe, todavía
estáis en vuestros pecados. 18 E incluso
los que han muerto en Cristo perecieron.
19 Y si tenemos puesta la esperanza
en Cristo sólo para esta vida, somos los
más miserables de todos los hombres.
20 Ahora bien, Cristo ha resucitado
de entre los muertos, como primer fruto
de los que mueren. 21 Porque como
por un hombre vino la muerte, también
por un hombre la resurrección de
los muertos. 22 Y así como en Adán todos
mueren, así también en Cristo todos
serán vivificados. 23 Pero cada uno
en su orden debido: como primer fruto,
Cristo; luego, con su venida, los que
son de Cristo. 24 Después llegará el fin,
cuando entregue el Reino a Dios Padre,
cuando haya aniquilado todo principado,
toda potestad y poder. 25 Pues es necesario
que él reine, hasta que ponga a
todos los enemigos bajo sus pies. 26 Como
último enemigo será destruida la muerte;
27 porque ha sometido todas las cosas
bajo sus pies, si bien cuando dice que todas
las cosas están sometidas, es indudable
que exceptúa al que sometió todo
a él. 28 Y cuando le hayan sido sometidas
todas las cosas, entonces también el
mismo Hijo se someterá a quien a él sometió
todo, para que Dios sea todo en
todas las cosas.
29 De otro modo, ¿qué conseguirán
los que se bautizan por los muertos? Si
los muertos no resucitan de ninguna
manera, ¿para qué se bautizan por ellos?
30 Y nosotros ¿para qué nos ponemos
continuamente en peligro? 31 Sí, hermanos,
cada día estoy a punto de morir
por la gloria que sois vosotros para mí
en Cristo Jesús, Señor nuestro. 32 Si por
miras humanas luché contra bestias en
Éfeso, ¿de qué me sirve? Si los muertos
no resucitan, comamos y bebamos, que
mañana moriremos. 33 No os dejéis seducir:
las malas compañías corrompen
las buenas costumbres. 34 Despertaos,
como es justo, y dejad de pecar. Porque
hay algunos que desconocen a Dios. Lo
digo para vergüenza vuestra.
35 Pero dirá alguno: «¿Cómo resucitan
los muertos? ¿Con qué cuerpo vuelven
a la vida?» 36 Necio. Lo que tú siembras
no revive si antes no muere; 37 y lo
que siembras no es el cuerpo que llegará
a ser, sino un simple grano, de trigo por
ejemplo, o de alguna otra cosa. 38 Dios,
en cambio, le da un cuerpo según su voluntad:
a cada semilla su propio cuerpo.
39 No toda carne es igual, sino que una
es la carne de los hombres, otra la de las
bestias, otra la de las aves, otra la de los
peces. 40 Hay también cuerpos celestes y
cuerpos terrestres; pero uno es el resplandor
de los celestes, y otro el de los
terrestres. 41 Uno es el resplandor del sol,
otro el de la luna y otro el de las estrellas;
y una estrella se diferencia de otra
en el resplandor. 42 Así será en la resurrección
de los muertos: se siembra en
corrupción, resucita en incorrupción;
43 se siembra en vileza, resucita en gloria;
se siembra en debilidad, resucita en
poder; 44 se siembra un cuerpo natural,
resucita un cuerpo espiritual.
Porque si hay un cuerpo natural,
también lo hay espiritual. 45 Así está escrito:
El primer hombre, Adán, fue hecho
ser vivo; el último Adán, espíritu que da
vida. 46 Pero no es primero lo espiritual,
sino lo natural; después lo espiritual.
47 El primer hombre, sacado de la tierra,
es terreno; el segundo hombre es
del cielo. 48 Como el hombre terreno, así son
los hombres terrenos; como el celestial, así
son los celestiales.
49 Y como hemos llevado la imagen
del hombre terreno, llevaremos también
la imagen del hombre celestial.
50 Esto os digo, hermanos: que la carne
y la sangre no pueden heredar el Reino
de Dios, ni la corrupción heredará la incorrupción.
51 Mirad, os declaro un misterio: no
todos moriremos, pero todos seremos
transformados, 52 en un instante, en un
abrir y cerrar de ojos, al son de la trompeta
final; porque sonará la trompeta,
y los muertos resucitarán incorruptibles,
y nosotros seremos transformados.
53 Porque es necesario que este cuerpo
corruptible se revista de incorruptibilidad,
y este cuerpo mortal se revista
de inmortalidad. 54 Y cuando este cuerpo
corruptible se haya revestido de incorruptibilidad,
y este cuerpo mortal se
haya revestido de inmortalidad, entonces
se cumplirá la palabra que está escrita:
La muerte ha sido absorbida en la
victoria.
55 ¿Dónde está, muerte, tu victoria?
¿Dónde está, muerte, tu aguijón?
56 El aguijón de la muerte es el pecado;
y la fuerza del pecado, la ley. 57 Pero
demos gracias a Dios, que nos da la victoria
por nuestro Señor Jesucristo. 58 Por
tanto, amados hermanos míos, manteneos
firmes, inconmovibles, progresando
siempre en la obra del Señor, sabiendo
que en el Señor vuestro trabajo no
es vano.
