Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 13:
Paul continues to answer questions from the believers in Corinth regarding spiritual gifts, revealing to them “a still more excellent way” (12:31). Paul declares that without love, a person with other spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophetic powers, understanding, faith, generosity, and even the courage to undergo suffering or martyrdom leave one as “nothing” and “gain nothing” for the person (vs. 1-3). Unlike other spiritual gifts that will no longer be needed in eternal life (prophecies, tongues, knowledge) or fulfilled in eternal life (faith and hope), love will endure, since our eternal God is Love.

The Way of Love
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; 5 it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; 10 but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. 13 So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

13 1 Aunque hablara las lenguas de
los hombres y de los ángeles, si no
tengo caridad, sería como el bronce que
resuena o un golpear de platillos.
2 Y aunque tuviera el don de profecía
y conociera todos los misterios y toda la
ciencia, y aunque tuviera tanta fe como
para trasladar montañas, si no tengo caridad,
no sería nada.
3 Y aunque repartiera todos mis bienes,
y entregara mi cuerpo para dejarme
quemar, si no tengo caridad, de
nada me aprovecharía.
4 La caridad es paciente, la caridad
es amable; no es envidiosa, no obra con
soberbia, no se jacta, 5 no es ambiciosa,
no busca lo suyo, no se irrita, no toma
en cuenta el mal, 6 no se alegra por la injusticia,
se complace en la verdad; 7 todo
lo aguanta, todo lo cree, todo lo espera,
todo lo soporta.
8 La caridad nunca acaba. Las profecías
desaparecerán, las lenguas cesarán,
la ciencia quedará anulada. 9 Porque
ahora nuestro conocimiento es imperfecto,
e imperfecta nuestra profecía.
10 Pero cuando venga lo perfecto, desaparecerá
lo imperfecto. 11 Cuando yo era
niño, hablaba como niño, sentía como
niño, razonaba como niño. Cuando he
llegado a ser hombre, me he desprendido
de las cosas de niño. 12 Porque ahora
vemos como en un espejo, borrosamente;
entonces veremos cara a cara. Ahora
conozco de modo imperfecto, entonces
conoceré como soy conocido. 13 Ahora
permanecen la fe, la esperanza, la caridad:
las tres virtudes. Pero de ellas la
más grande es la caridad.
